I'm trying to install Vista 64bit but I only have an external dvd writer. I do have an external usb drive but i'm not sure how to use that to install.

You have to enter BIOS and select boot options.
In some cases you would see an option called "USB CD-ROM" in bootchoices (put this on top of the list).
Sometimes it might just be called "Boot other devices".
