Does this sound like a graphics card error?

Hello everyone,

I just want to know if a graphics card is not working, would it prevent me logging into vista? like there isn't enough graphics to boot vista? is this possible?
Also would a malfunctioning graphics card cause weird symbols in the BIOS, like weird vertical lines, dollar signs replacing spaces, E's replacing F's, A's replacing N's etc.?
Also could a power surge possibly damage the graphics card? in terms of hardware?
I am not asking for a fix here; i just want to know if this can happen:)

Thank you for your time

Yes a powersurge can mess with a card, hopefully you have a surge protector.

NO, the BIOS is booted from the mobo, so the card should not mess with it, not in that manner.

It also should not prevent you logging in....

No, i did not have a surge protector, and this is why my grpahics card is stuffed right now....

Yes, the BIOS is booted from the mother board. However, on other forums ppl who have had this problem fixed it by replacing their graphics card. I do not know why since it had nothing to do with it?

When I try to log into windows normally, a Blue Screen of Death appears saying:
"Attempt to reset the display driver and recover fromt timeout failed"
I think the only thing stopping me from booting is graphics card.... or maybe my motherboard malfunctioned also? sigh...

Thanks for your reply !:)

Ok, get a surgeprotector.

Try this:
Do you have onboard graphics? Take out your graphics card, and plug your Monitor into the motherboard and boot up. Does it work? If it does, then it is indeed a bad video card.

Ok, well the pro's sometime know what they are doing.... Lol my mom made me take my computer into Geek Squad, and they had no clue whatsoever that anything was wrong. My computer wouldn't start up.... (good job IT "pros") I fixed it myself a week later.
