Stretched screen

Hi,
My computer screen is stretched. My monitor resolution is at its highest: 1024 x 768 pixels. Normally I should be able to select a higher resolution, but my only two options right now are 1024x768 (high) and 800x600 (low).
How can I fix this?
I don't know if this is important, but the following Windows updates keep failing: "Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad", "NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150", and "Realtek High Definition Audio".
Thanks!
