I have two printers attached to a XP system desktop. I also have 2 vista laptops. One can use the printers and the other just recently gets the error message operation could not be completed (error 0x00000709) Make sure that you have typed the name correctly and that the printer is connected to network. I can see the XP computer on the network and can open other files and use them. I can see the printers also but get this error message when clicking on them. I need help. I tried to everything and nothing works. Everything in Vista is the same on both laptops. Both are Dell. Help!

I have same problem connecting from my laptop running Vista 32 to a PC running Vista64 with networked computer. It worked fine in the past, but after many upgrades (service pack 1 etc) error has occured. Using Kodak AIO printer but this problem seems not to be printer specific. I'll let you know if I figure it out.

I have the same problem. I have tried everything I could think of to connect from a vista pc to a printer on another vista pc including all of the solutions proposed on the web. It seems that something is blocking my ability to connect to the printer even though it shows up in the network neighborhood. I have tried to manually add ports as well as other solutions that I have seen on the Internet. Did you find a solution?

Thanks.

I also have the same problem. I even installed the Kodak printer software in my Vista laptop, but that didn't help. I get the same error. If I go into the printer Properties on my XP desktop to which the Kodak printer is connected, and click on Sharing, there is a box suggesting to load other drivers if other networked PCs use different versions of windows. That's why I installed the software on my laptop, but to no avail. We could all use an answer to this problem. Thanks!!

I "fixed" the error....yay! :D Today I took my Kodak 5300 All-In-One Printer's CD and reinstalled it onto my desktop PC wich runs on XP. Then I installed it onto my laptop which runs on Vista. My printer is connected to the desktop PC which is in my basement, connected to a cable modem and wireless router. It is wired to the router and the printer is also wired to it. When the installation was almost completed for the laptop, a window appeared saying to connect the Printer. I clicked on Cancel to close this window, then rebooted my laptop as requested. I opened up the Printers folder and the Kodak 5300 is listed as "KODAK 5300 AiO on Delltower". Delltower is the name of my desktop to which the printer is connected.

So, I suggest that to fix this error, Reinstall the printer software on your PC to which the printer is connected. Make sure you reboot it. Then install the same software on your laptop(s) and when asked to connect the printer, click cancel. Reboot. Check your laptop's printer folder. You should be all set!!! :)

I was searching the web looking for help with the same error message - after having my vista HP laptop refusing to allow me to use the kodak printer on my xp computer - that has been working just fine for months now.

I've not had my User Account Control on - it annoys me to be quite honest about it - but after doing some more research, (which i did after the above suggestion did NOT work at all), another vista-ish forum suggested the "Turn on your UAC".

So I did that, had to reboot, and when I opened up the printer folder - lo and behold - THERE IT WAS!!!!

Hip hip hooray!

Just thought I'd let others' know - especially since this is microsofts' own vista site. (or that was my understanding)

Good Luck!

I am having similar problems and am greatly in need of assistance. I have tried every solution I've found so far including turning on UAC, installing the drivers on both PCs first before trying to connect to the network printer, adding printer as a new local port, as a new tcp/ip port, and even trying to add a new port to the printer installation on the Vista PC.

I have
- Vista Home Premium x64 on the PC that is unable to connect.
- Windows Home Server on the PC that is sharing
- The printer is an HP D5360

I am putting in the network address of the printer as "//server/office" (less the "" of course) during my attempts to add port and the printer does show up in network places, but when I double click it I get the error 0x00000709. It also shows up when I do the automated "add printer", but when I select it and try to add I get the message, "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Make sure that you have typed the name correctly, and that the printer is connected to network."

Any input would be greatly appreciated, this is driving me nuts.

I just purchased a Dell Studio loaded with Vista Home Premium 64 bit, and am having the same problem. My desktop is an older Dell, running XP, and my shared printer is a Lexmark 8300. I loaded new Lexmark drivers on the new laptop, but that did not fix the problem. All was working well with my older laptop (Systemax) running XP. I'll try the suggestions listed below in the next few days and report back. In the meantime, if anyone else has any recommendations, I'd sure appreciate them!

I have been experiencing this on Vista 32b printing to an HP LaserJet 1022 attached to an XP machine. This symptom may be generic and causes may differ. I think it tends to crop up if I attempt to access the printer before the remote machine or printer is up and running. I have found two workarounds for my case: I can switch user to an admin account, and the printer is accessible from there (while the non-admin remains unable to access it). Or I can reboot and the nonadmin can then access.

I had the same problem. Adding the network path as a local printer port was not an acceptable work-around. I was able to permanently solve the issue by completing the following steps:

Manage network connections
Go into your LAN properties
Click Client for Microsoft Networks and hit Uninstall
Reboot
Go back into LAN properties and click Install -> Client -> Client for Microsoft Networks
Reboot
Add the network printer as you normally would.

I had this problem and turns out it was caused by an expired password. I had my user hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, change password, log off and back on and bingo! printers all work again

:D

Drivers are the communication link between the hardware devices connected to a computer and the Operating System. Network printers on a computer require network drivers as well as printer drivers. Issues with any one of them can result in configuration problems as there would be communication gaps. The users are advised to check the printer or network drivers installed on the system using device manager and if the drivers are found illegitimate or outdated, they should be replaced to solve the issues.

THANK YOU, so much for your help. I tried a million things. This worked immediately!!

I bought a Samsung CLX-3185FW color laser printer and kept receiving this error when trying to install the print driver: Operation could not becompleted (error 0x000005b3). I also received an error that said I needed to be an administrator, yet I was logged in as the administrator. The software for the copier/scanner/fax loaded fine. Troubleshooting this was so frustrating to me, that I'm posting my fix here with the hope that this will help others. To solve this problem, go to start > control panel> user accounts and turn off the user account control, then download thecurrent driver from Samsung's website, right-click the file and select Run asan administrator.
