Removed Norton, added AVG, no internet now

Ok, so my Norton Internet Security expired on my Asus laptop and I uninstalled it and Norton LiveUpdate. My internet worked fine. Then I installed AVG 8.5 antivirus and as soon as I rebooted the machine my internet stopped working. It says "the connection keeps resetting" when I try and get on the internet, and I cannot update the AVG now. I did turn on the Windows Firewall right after restarting, but after turning it back off, I'm still without internet.

I'm using a NetGear wireless router connected to a broadband modem.
Any suggestions?

This tool is very important when uninstalling Norton since normal uninstalling does not remove all traces of Norton. The tool can be found on the Norton website and is free and removes every last trace of Norton.

Try also uninstalling and reinstalling AVG after running the Norton tool...

Yes the Norton Removal Tool should remove all traces but alas sometimes remnants still remain & need to be hunted. [ learnt from past experience with Norton bloatware preinstalled on Win OS 98, XP Pro & Vista Ultimate.]
Incidentally there is an AVG removal tool too.

Suggestion: After using Norton Removal tool, *make sure* that Windows Firewall with Advanced Settings does not show Public Profile "Active." You indicated that you turned the Firewall off, but check this to be sure as this was the source of my connectivity problem after removing Norton 360. I turned that profile off, was able to connect and the again choose from Public or Private Profile for the connection. (Public Profile prevents all incoming traffic).
