Is your uncle using 802.11N? its a wireless standard there is 802.11g and 802.11b which are the standard N is quite new , if he is using that and your adapter only works on G and B that could be the issue

The cmoputer and your uncle's router have to be using the same frequencies.

So

  • Manufacturer/Model
    Acer Aspire X1700
    Motherboard
    ASUS
    Memory
    3 gigs
    Graphics Card(s)

    Monitor(s) Displays
    Vizio 21" tv
    Screen Resolution
    1920x1080 resolution
    Hard Drives
1 terabyte sata in 1 partition
    Cooling
    fans that came with it
    Keyboard
    basic USB
    Mouse
    basic USB
    Internet Speed
3 megabits on a cable modem, wired
The cmoputer and your uncle's router have to be using the same frequencies.

So if he has a G and you have an N, your laptop wont connect to it. They have to be the same or have the same capabilities.

how do i check if i have N or whatever, and if we dont have teh same frequentcy can i change that?

I would look up the specifications online. Just do a search on the router and the laptop. That should tell you if they share a version of the wirelss types.

Unless one of them has multiple frequency capability, I doubt they can be changed.
