Ethernet Cable Only Provides "Local Only" Connection (Second Minor Problem Within)

Okay, I'll give you a quick run down of what had happened. I had plugged in my Ethernet cable, and it was working just fine. I had a glorious 100 mbps connection and all was well in the gaming world. Then one day, I decide to use my laptop for college (meaning I unplugged my cable), thus forcing me to use their wireless connection. So I did that, and then I used their wireless. Afterwards, I got home and plugged in the cable. Yet something was off, it didn't connect me to the internet.

I have a wireless connection as well, but I disabled that. Still no luck. I tried a ipconfig/release and /renew shtick, and still no luck. The connectivity doctor SEES that the Ethernet is plugged in and SAYS it is conencted, yet it still says "Local Only" for my connection. I updated my Ethernet port to the latest software available, and it STILL doesn't work. So what should I do that i haven't already tried?

I have been searching for help via the internet and I still haven't turned up anything beside the ipconfig commands, the fixit thing, and the obvious of powering down my modem/updating my port. I'll try anything at this point to help me out. This 54 mbps connection is killing me... Litterally... In a game... <_<

Second Problem:
Ever since I connected to a public router at my college, Fire Fox no longer saves my cookies. I set my internet to private, and everything is set for cookies to be saved - yet the cookies just don't get saved. Things stay in the cache and history, but I now have to log in to forums and such every time I close and then open Fire Fox.
