A bit more information. My daughter tells me that the wireless connection stopped working after a windows update, so nothing new there.
So there I am thinking ok lets remove that update and it will be ok.
Problem is system restore doesn't open.

I type system restore in start and I get the message

rstrui.exe allow this program

Allowing it nothing happens the program doesn't open so I a bit stuffed as to see the updates ie the cause of the problem.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks

You have two options to system restore:

1. Insert the vista disc and do a system restore from that
2. Ty doing it in safe mode

I would try the 2nd option first because its probably easier. Let me know if that works.

By the way, rstrui.exe is associated with the restore console, so you should allow that, but it shouldn't be prompting you to allow that. Hmm..

Let me know about the system restore, and then we'll try and sort out the rstrui.exe uac prompt.

Haven't got a copy of Vista 32 bit only 64 and daughter had never done creation of restore disks. Least she told me was working ok until windows did it's last update.
So I uninstalled the last lot of updates and guess what it's working fine now.
So will update one at a time and hopefully find the culprit.
I've now set the system to ask about updates and not do it's own thing.
All I've got to sort out now is why it takes an eternity to boot up!

Thanks for the reply

Well done, it sounds as if the problem has been solved. The process of elimination should be able to narrow it down for you.

Can you let us know which update it was? And maybe we will be able to try to fix the problem.

It was one of either of 2 security updates KB980232 or KB979683. I didn't re-install either so both updates are missing but at least it works.

Thanks

Yes at least it now works but one wonders why a Microsoft supposedly helpfull update in fact makes life hell!
I've read about a lot of Microsoft updates that cause untold trouble I wonder sometimes if it worth bothering with them. Though to be fair I've never had any trouble after downloading them, just this one instance on daughters laptop.

Thanks
