Solved Unidentified Network-Please HELP!!

I edited and deleted most of my original post tonight. I guess it was too long???

I just spent another 2+ hours with Linksys Tech support to try and solve the Unidentified Network issue on my laptop. Once we got the desktop to connect wirelessly, he was done with me and the guy gave up on me. He told me to contact Atheros or HP for help.

As a stretch, I deleted the Atheros driver and installed an updated version. It did update the driver, but it did not solve my issue.

I still cannot connect wirelessly. I think I have tried almost everything listed in other posts and read the posted links of articles.

What do I do now?

Hi guys. I'm new here and need some help. My old Linksys router died and I purchase a new Linksys E1000 V2 router Sunday. I tried to install it and I had issues. I did the on line chat with Tech Support several times and no luck.

The problem is that I have an Unidentified Network. I can see the name of the network in the Manage Networks page. The Unidentified network has the network name in (), is listed a Public and it shows a connection as Local Only. I have a hardwired network that I'm connected to now that is Local and Internet connected through the router and it's private.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Kevin

I followed the steps described in your post.

Here is the snip. I had to do it twice because it wouldn't all fit in one snip. Sorry.

I also ran the file int the link.

One thing of note is after I changed the network to "Private", it went back to "Public" after the automatic restart.

Is that normal?

Hi Shrevmo,

First, go to Start / Control Panel / Network and sharing Center / Manage Network Connections and right click on this unidentified network and click on status and then click on details. I'd like either a screenshot or snips of all three open screens. Then click on Diagnose for that connection and see what happens. If it shows no errors or only offers to reset the adapter or report to microsoft, then close it with the red X.

I'm tempted to just recommend you delete this unknown connection, but I'd rather see the information about it first. I suspect it is interfering somehow with your wireless connection but I don't know why. And I also don't know how it got there or why I couldn't see it in the IPCONFIG /ALL snips you attached. If it exists and is connected (and how exactly do you know this - where are you looking to confirm this is the case?), then where is it in IPCONFIG? Are you certain you captured everything in the IPCONFIG report even using the two screens? Once we see what it shows, there's an extremely good change we are going to delete this connection (especially if it shows as being connected) - but let's hold our horses just a little while longer. Are you certain this is a regular network connection and not a wireless connection?

Next, go to Manage Wireless Networks and right click on your Wireless connection (and while there, verify the Unknown Network Connection is NOT there) and click on Properties and go to IPv4 and verify that it is set to automatically get your DNS addresses. Do the same in IPv6. I would normally expect to see the same TCP/IP address as the DHCP server and the default gateway there in IPCONFIG, but it's listing two specific addresses which I suspect may have been set and that may be why you're having a problem (at least that's how it works on my system). They may also be simply those provided by the ISP and may have been required with the prior router and that may no longer be the case - but let's try this. Just in case, write down what they are before you change to automatically get them if it isn't already set that way. Then reboot and see if that helps. If not, send me another IPCONFIG /ALL if you made any changes (otherwise don't bother).

That's it for now. We need to confirm it's OK to delete this unidentified network and then I think we should definitely do that to see how that affects things (but only after we see what it's all about if we can - I want to do this as safely as possible).

And no, it is not normal for a connection to change from Public to Private or vice-versa simply because of a reboot. Something else is going on - but I don't yet know what.

Thanks for your assistance and I hope this helps either resolve the problem or perhaps at least gets us closer to identifying it.

Good luck!

OK, thanks for the reply.

To answer one question about the wireless network, I assume it is working because my desktop can connect to it. It has the same name as the unidentified network and I had to use the same password.

The Network and Sharing Center shows 2 networks. The one I use on the laptop when I post is hardwired though the router. That network is listed as private and local/internet. It does not have any of the wireless signal strength bars nor does it say wireless anywhere.

Beneath that, I have the wireless connection. It says "unidentified" and it has the name of the network in parenthesis. That is the same name that appears on my desktop that I can connect to.

When I unplug and try to connect wirelessly, Unidentified Network says "verifying" and then goes to "unidentified".

Whenever I change the public/private setting, it reverts back to public after each reboot or whe I attempt to connect wirelessly and it goes through the verification cycle.

I already rest the router and deleted all the networks and started over, but I can do it again if necessary. I also cleared the DNS cache.

I'm at work right now so I will not be able to do anything until later tonight. I'll post up when I get home and perform the instructions listed above. It will be around 9:30-10:00.

I will do all the snips tonight.

Thanks for being patient!

Here are the snips you requested Lorien. Thank you for the reply.

I took ships of the local hardwired network and the wireless network. It seems that I have 2 networks connected at the same time. 1 wireless and 1 hardwired. I'm sorry, but I'm starting to get very confused and if I am not explaining myself correctly, I appologize.

When I unplug from the hardwired network my laptop will not connect to the wireless network that my othe computer is connected to. The wireless network is unidentified on my laptop. It does work on the desktop using XP
Either I misunderstood Josh when I did the original snips or maybe you have misunderstood me. I'm sure I misunderstood since I am not super computer savy.

When I followed the directions from Josh, I did the ipconfig step with the hardwired network unplugged. I thought I was supposed to do it with the wireless network only based on what he wrote.

Lastly Make sure you only have a Wireless connection when you Follow the Steps

Did I do that incorrectly?

Here is the snip of the ipconfig with with my computer hardwired through the router and with what I believe to be connected to a wireless network.

I hope these help and I'm sorry about the confusion.

Don't apologize. You did fine both times - exactly as instructed and just what we wanted to see (well, just what we requested - not precisely what I wanted to see). I requested something different than Josh because I wanted to see how the connections were showing up together and if they were interfering with each other.

Did you make the changes to DNS I requested before doing these snips? I still see the DNS connection addresses instead of the router's address (which is what I expected).

Please give us some time to analyze this information and try to figure out what is happening and possibly what to try or do next. Chances are good we'll need to run some additional tests.

Thank you!

OK, I'm glad I understood and I've given you some good information and that is what was requested.

I did miss the last part of your post requesting more information on the DNS and IPv4 & 6 addresses along with the TCP/IP and the DHCP information.

I am at work this morning and I will get you the requested info as soon as I get home this afternoon.

Thanks for being patient and thanks for all your help.

Well. I'm home from work and ready to to the step that I forgot to do last night.

When I go to manage networks, both of the networks are shown. I will perform the actions on both networks.

Both networks were set to automatic and did not have any fields with info.

I don't believe that I need to snip another ipconfig/all because I did not change anything.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hey guys, I know its been a couple of weeks since I posted up, but I'm still having the same issues. I'm not real big on bumping my own threads.

I actually had to send out my machine to be repaired. The charging port broke..too many cables I guess:(

In the mean time, I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. Right out of the box the new laptop connected to my network. This is the same network that the Vista machine finds unidentified.

I just got the Vista machine back from repair and I was hoping that at some point during the repair that my issue would somehow have been miraculously fixed. Well.....it didn't, so I guess I'm back to square 1.

Thanks for all your help so far, but I'd really like to get the Vista machine to connect wirelessly. That would make the wife VERY happy...and me too since then we wouldn't have to share!

Many Thanks,
Kevin

Hi,

Have you looked in your "Manage wireless connections" settings in "Network & sharing center"

There coud be a duplicate of your curent network? If so delete it or them & go from there.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the reply. I have tried numerous things I searched on the net to try and get this sorted out. Well, I think I really messed things up now so I did a system restore to before I sent the machine out to be repaired. That was just after I started this thread a few weeks ago.

I now have NO wireless connectivity at all. The wifi button does nothing and says it is "disabled".

I reset the router and started over. I created a new network and I am able to get my new laptop with Win 7, my work laptop on XP and my desktop, also with XP to connect to the "new" network after the reset.

This Vista machine will just not cooperate! It will not recognize the wireless network at all.

Please find a new snip attached without the network cable plugged in. They are #'s 1&2.
Snips 3&4 are while the network cable is plugged in and connected to the net while I'm currently posting.

As usual, many thanks for the help and replies.

Just an update and an edit.

To resolve the disabled wifi issue, I had to uninstall my HP Wireless Assistant and reinstall it. Then I turned off the wifi via the button and actually turned it on manually within the properties in HP Assistant. What a PIA! I am now able to view my wireless network and I am back to the ["unidentified network" (public network)] issue.

So, where do I go from here?

As always, thanks!

OK, thanks. I did not post an ipconfig /all snip because it was the same as earlier posts from a couple weeks ago. The only difference was the ip address. Sorry, I didn't know it was needed again.

I followed the directions in the link and find the snip attached.

I ran the batch file as well.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Here are some shots of my Network and Sharing Center page.

One snip is of what happens when I'm running wireless only with the "Unidentified Network" Local Only.

The other is when I'm hard wired and using the net. It shows the 2 networks.

The network that all of my other wireless computers connect to is the Family Network which seeems to work fine.

This is the error messsage I get when I click on the Red X.

Thanks

OK,

Looking at that go to the network and sharing control panel.

Manage my connections.

Look for how many & what connections are listed, the setting, passswords etc. will help to identify them? Then once you have identified the douplicate network connection, delete it.

This should then only leave the working one & all should be well.

Good morning all or afternoon to those "across the pond",

I solved my problem with the networking issue I was having. After various attempts from this incredible forum's suggestions and surfing the web I now have 1 private network with full connectivity and great signal on all 3 of my machines.

How did I do it? I upgraded to Windows 7. After reading all the comments about Vista and all of people's issues, I decided Vista was the issue and I took a $125 chance. It took a long time. I actually have no idea how long. I started it and went to bed. Low and behold it WORKED this morning!!

I extend many thanks to all of the super knowledgeble members for all of your help, suggestions and patience.

Will you please mark this thread as solved.

Happy Holidays to all and thanks again!

Kevin
