Hello all,
I am posting this just as an FYI for anyone having problems with their wireless network adapter connecting to their network.
For a while now, I have been having problems connecting my netbook to a network. Initially I thouht the problem was with my home network, but when I tested it with other networks, both public and private, I had the same problem.
I tried tweaking everything to no avail.
Yesterday I was messing around and realised that Microsoft Security Essentials had not done a complete system scan for a while (it does a quick scan by default) so I set it to run and walked away (it took about 3 hours).
Turns out MSE picked up 3 Java exploit viruses (?) on my netbook. It removed them and now I have no problem connecting to my network. See links below for details.
So far, with luck, I have not detected any of the things that are listed in the article below (changing home page etc) so maybe I have caught this early enough but to be sure, I am going to run another MSE scan today.
Samsung N220 netbook
Realtek RTL8192 wireless adapter
Symptoms: Clicking on the 'wireless' icon in the system tray brings up few, if any visible networks
Computer will connect sometimes briefly, sometimes for longer, sometimes not at all.
Sometimes it's 'local access only', sometimes it connects to an 'unidentified public network' ( was that the virus trying to call out I wonder?)
Symptoms persist with all networks.
