using a crossover cable to transfer files between 2 Vista PCs

I'm trying to use a crossover cable to transfer files from one Vista PC to another Vista PC. According to this article:
How to Build a Local Area Network Without a Router
"If you are using default accounts like Administrator on both machines, make sure both accounts have the same password. You can set the password by hitting Control + Alt + Delete and clicking on Change password. You can change it on that form. Then go ahead and try to connect again and this time, it should connect.".

My data transfer was halted by an error message stating that I did not have the appropriate authority and privilege (even though I was logged on as an administrator!?!) to do so.

Therefore, my question is: How can I check that both of my PC Admin accounts are using the same password (since the password does not display) ? Or better yet, is there a hassle-free way to perform the transfer using a crossover cable?

Thanks,
Dan

You don't really need a crossover cable. Both computers can be on the same network and it can still work. As far as I know the passwords don't need to be the same just as long as you know the other password. One thing to note is that the accounts have to have a password. Try this guide. Townsbg,
I don't know the Admin passwords for my PCs. It was so long ago since I bought them and since I am the solo user most likely I never password protected them; but if I did, is there a way I can find out?
I'm bypassing my router and connecting them directly via the crossover cable.
Thanks,
Dan

I am not running Vista now but if you open up user accounts from the control panel it should say if the account is password protected however you have to be able to log in. I've never used a crossover cable but I have used the router.

This is my 1st go-around with a crossover cable as well. It's more of a challenge to get it to work than a necessity (I can always transfer files with a thumb drive, if needbe).

Why don't you use the router?
