Outlook 2007 Vista recovery of .PSt and contacts

Hi team,
I have searched for guidence but to no avail.... HELP please.
Vista has failed and I have only "command prompt (DOS) and a 4 gig memory stick to recover data. I can not see the directory in dos that I believe the data is stored - c:\users\gibbonz\appxx\*.pst.

Using Vista Business, with a Dell Inspiron. Outlook 2007 only as a email and contacts manager (as part of Office 2007)

I am trying to rebuild the boot loader but not having any luck and would really like to recover emails and contacts.

I have transfered Documents, photos and spreadsheets with no issues.

Help with the likes of "app data (.PST is in a hidden file / directory )and you need to ???" would be great.

The file you are looking for is (assuming you haven't changed any defaults):

C:\users\gibbonz\appdata\local\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst

You seem to know your way around cmd, so I won't belabor you with step by step "type cd appdata", etc.

Even though the folder is hidden, you can still access it in the cmd prompt. In case you need to see hidden folders again, here's how: In the folder you know the thing is in, type "dir /ah". As I figure you know, "dir" will simply show all the folders and files you could see just by double-clicking on the folder. The "/ah" tells it to show all hidden folders and files. This will, however, only show the hidden ones. If you need to see everything, drop the "h" and just type "dir /a". This will show you everything, including system files, so be very careful.

To recover the pst file. You can use Inbox Repair tool which is used to repair corrupted file of pst. To run Inbox repair tool fallow the steps:

1. Click on start goes to the search then click on files or folders option.
2. In search box type scanpst.exe.
3. Double click on the scanpst.exe file to open the inbox repair tool.
4. Then enter the location of Pst file and its name or browse it for the path.
5. Then start to repair.

This way you can repair your pst file. But if your file is badly damaged you may not able to repair it. At that time you can use some software. You can try a tool called Advanced Outlook Repair to repair your PST file. It is a powerful tool to recover messages, folders and other objects from corrupt or damaged Microsoft Outlook PST files. Hope this helps.

Well guys in my case the scapst.exe does not find or do anything.

So i restored my .pst with the back-up from the day before. I mean your Daily Back-up must not be forgotten.

Ummm, btw - what part of

when i go to start, then search on the bottom.....there is no option for files or folder????

can you point me in that direction?

you perform the search from inside windows explorer, and there is an advanced button there allowing you to specify the types of items you're looking for.

true, but even if the viruses "seem" not do to any arm, i want to get rid of it. What i do not understand is: "Why can a virus program not delete the email that contains the virus, instead of the whole file.

I can try the different programs like Bitdefender, Trendmicro, nod32 etc, but i feel that i will have a lot of work restoring the "pst" file.

It depends upon whether the AV performs active scanning or not. If it performs active scanning, then the mail is scanned while downloading *before* it is written to your .PST file - but if it does not, then it can only scan once it is on your HD - i.e. in your .PST file.

In this respect, I like Symantec's business products because they scan outlook, Notes, and other third party client mails *before* they get added to the HD, and can quarantine the threats if any exist.

I know other products have active scanning like that as well, but sometimes it is not enabled (either by design / default or because someone purposefully didn't enable it / disabled it because of high resource usage).
