Adobe Reader - side by side configuration is inaccurate error

I have Vista. When someone sends me an Adobe document I can't open it. The error message says that my side by side configuration is inaccurate. If I save the document to my desktop, I can then open Adobe and open it from there but it is a hassle. Why can't I just open the document from the source?

Latest version of Acrobat? Tried uninstalling and re-installing to see if it fixes it?

Didn't do something silly like use a duplicate file utility or remove things from the WinSxS folder?

Better option, use Foxit instead,

Foxit Software - Foxit Reader for Windows

I get error message referring to side-by-side configuration being incorrect. It tells me to see application event log for more detail. Even if I 'could' find this event log, what would I be looking for?
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Did not help.
