I'm trying to restore my computer and it is absolutely driving me CRAZY! Last thursday I tried running the HP Recovery manager to restore it back to it's factory image and it kept freezing around 77%, so I chatted online with an HP customer support guy and he told me I needed to get the restore disks. I got the restore disks today and it freezes at 33%! What should I do?

I can't get into my computer anymore. It loads the HP recovery manager when the disk is in there, there is no way to get into the Recovery Manager in Safe Mode.

Edit: Well I can get into safe mode, but all it does is just tries to load windows files then goes right back into the regular HP Recovery Manager.

My HP Recovery Manager freezes halfway through reinstalling everything in the restore pc to factory image thing. And this is using my HP recovery disks which they told me would work because even if your hard drive is corrupt, the HP disks will fix it. Well my computer still freezes. Is it possible I am missing a dll file? What can I do at this point?

I am having the exact same problem. My computer was working fine until 3 weeks ago when it crashed updating Windows. I was able to restore to factory condition by using the recovery manager but each time I shut down it would crash again. I called HP support several times and fianlly ordered the recovery disks.
The recovery disks work fine until I load recovery disk 2 - it freezes at 1%. I called HP support again. This time they said I could get additional warranty for $398 - I can buy a new computer for that and if I do it won't be an HP. I also learned that the warranty only covers tech support over the telephone.
I tried loading the disks in safe mode but the same thing happens in the same place. This is driving me crazy too.

Give HP another call
Depending on when you purchased the computer, you could go back to the supplier who may help or even "lean gently" on HP. It has worked at times.

I am experiencing the exact same thing. My hard drive failed completely and I had to install a new one. HP Recovery Manager is terrible! It does not do the same thing each time. Sometimes it never gets to the Recovery window, sometimes it fails to format the Windows partition, sometimes it gets all the way to "Reinstalling original content" and then quits at 1%. I've been playing with this for months. I've gotten all the way through it twice and had nothing on the drive when it finished. I don't understand that one at all.
I know my hardware is fine - to test it I loaded Ubuntu...ran fine. I then loaded the Release Candidate version of Windows 7 and ran without issue for 5 months! I don't want to spend the money on the full version of Windows 7, but if I can't get Vista reloaded on my PC I won't have a choice.
I will never buy another HP computer if they continue to rely on this junk Recovery Manager.

Wow! I just found out two things from HP. First...there is an issue with Recovery Manager and Seagate Barracuda hard drives that causes hangs. Second...I just received the following from HP support:

"The motherboard and the hard drive are synchronized in such a way that if you change the hard drive of the system then the HP set of recovery disc will not work with the new hard drive and in this case the system needs to be tattooed in order to synchronized the hard drive with the motherboard.
Therefore I would recommend you to tattoo in order to synchronized the hard drive with the motherboard.
In order to tatoo the hard drive you need to send the computer for the service and that will be chargeable."

So HP screws you into buying any replacement hard drives from them. Un-freaking-believeable!

I agree about the recovery manager but if it is stopping with the disks, your HDD is bad. Mine went bad (Seagate) and they sent me a Hitachi and it worked great with the disks. I removed my recovery partition and just extended my primary. System restore is all you need for these things.

You may need to make sure your BIOS are up to date. Sometimes the recovery of a new drive doesnt like it with a different drive installed.

HP recovery manager is a smart idea, but not easily used when the drive decides to die.
