Side-by-side configuration error after Quicken 2010 upgrade

Hello Richard,

I've run a scan and the result appears encouraging:

"Windows Resource Protection" did not find any integrity violations."

Attached is a copy of the results: sfcdetailsFrancaBB.txt

I'm moving on to the sxstrace ... according to Lorien's directions.

George

Hello George!

Well done on creating a new thread. Thanks for that!

Well, nothing wrong in the SFC log. That has got to be good - as long as we get a lead from one of the other logs!

Thanks for continuing on. I am afraid that I can do nothing until I get those other logs, as that SFC logs showed nothing wrong.

Again, thank you, and the very best of luck!

Richard

Richard,

Here is the sxstrace.txt and CheckSUR.log. The former is empty even though I double-checked the steps that Lorien provided. Let me know if the null result is possible or do I need to re-do this.

The CheckSur.log has results but they all seem okay and benign.

Where do we go from here Boss?

Thank you,

George

Richard,

I forgot to mention this, as I was downloading the SURT, I think I noticed that it said that it expects Service Pack 2 to be loaded.

Yesterday, the msinfo results showed that the current version on this system is:
"6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001"

Does that give you anymore understanding?

Hello!

Well done on all you have done so far. Interesting problem. None of those logs have showed anything. There is another, quick log, which should give me a clue.

Firstly, is Quicken the only problem program, or the program which caused the problem for several/many?

CheckSUR.log is clean. SFC log is clean. No errors there. The sxstrace log obviously wasn't set up quite right for your computer. It is nothing either of us did wrong. I thought that the cause was x, set up the log to look for x, but when the cause turned out to be y, it returned no x. Sort of understand?

To try to find out what y is, I need to examine your Event Log.

Also, there is a mistake on the Microsoft Website. SURT does not require SP2, contrary to what they say. However, we shall work at getting SP2 installed as well, to make sure your computer is as secure as it can be.

Excellent work again! This canned speech is courtesy of Jacee. Give the credit to her! First, please run up to a maximum of three programs which don't work. ie Run Quicken, OK out of the message, and do the same for another two programs, if there are other programs which don't work. With no errors remaining on the screen:

Please download VEW by Vino Rosso http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.

Double click it to start it. Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will need to right click the file and select Run as administrator and click Continue or Allow at the User Account Control Prompt.

Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left

Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Critical, Error and Warning and Information.

Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run

Summary: Check all six check boxes, choose a number of reports, and set it to 20.

Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad. Ideally, upload it, but pasting it between CODE tags is also fne.

The very best of luck!

Richard

P.S. I haven't forgotten about the .net Framework!

Good afternoon Richard,

I'm getting back to work on this troubleshooting now and will follow your latest directions.

To quickly answer your question, so far, Quicken 2011 is the only progarm that causes this side-by-side configuration error. All other programs are continuing to operate normally.

I'll feed you other results shortly.

Richard,

While VEW is recording, I attempted to run Quicken 2011 and received the same side-by-side error message. There are no other troubled applications and so a pressed CTL-ALT-DEL to check Proccesses and Applications Running.

Here's the VEWFrancaBB.txt log ...

I deal with a lot of people, please forgive me. You have installed all of the VC++ Runtimes, I think.

Can you find this file: C:\PROGRA~1\ZONELA~1\ZONEAL~1\MAILFR~1\mlfhook.dll

This is Zone Alarm, and not Quicken! I don't see the Quicken error. However, I think that it is safe to assume that it will be exactly the same error.

Unfortunately, I have just run out of time :( I need to extract the manifest, and have a look. I shall show you how to do this in a few hours.

Thanks so much for your patience!

Richard

Hello!

Please can you download the trial of Resource Tuner from here: Resource Editor for Windows EXE and DLL Files: Resource Tuner.

If you would like an alternative to this, just ask, there is a command line Microsoft one available, bundled in the massive Windows SDK. However, this is far easier, and can be uninstalled in a flash.

Please use Resource Extractor to copy and paste for me the manifest of C:\PROGRA~1\ZONELA~1\ZONEAL~1\MAILFR~1\mlfhook.dll, and Quicken if you can find it. However, I suspect that the problem assembly is the same, and so mlfhook.dll will do.

Thanks!

Richard
