Media center remote to turn on webcam?

Hello all. Didn't really know where to look for an answer to this, so I thought I would pick the brains of those still running the same operating system as myself.

I have a logitech webcam (can't remeber the exact model, will post later) which is hooked up to my homes desktop pc. The pc is located in my family room, and when turned on I am able to see pretty much the whole room. I set it up this way thinking I could more easily capture moments of my 2 year old son acting like a 2 year old. Hilarious. I don't have a camcorder, but have found it cumbersome to activate the camera at times, especially if I am in the adjoining room.

Is there a periperal type remote control that I could use to turn the webcam on? Or, could I safely let the camera run all day without risk of spying, and also of using up massive amounts of hdd space?

Any insights would be sincerely appreciated.
