Solved Program won't open - appears as a service

This query concerns Corel Paint Shop Pro X (PSP) which has been running happily for years on my Vista PC. Since another program caused a BSOD recently, PSP has refused to open. The other program is one no-one here will ever have heard of, it is simply a front-end to an Access database of limited interest, and the source is trustworthy, but amateur. I have the same program running happily on my Win10 laptop, but it won't now run on the Vista machine (although it used to).

So, if I click one of the PSP icons I get an hourglass symbol which goes away eventually without anything happening. There are no error messages. Also nothing happens when I click on an image file, but in that case I sometimes get a message that the file xxxx.jpg cannot be found, despite the fact that xxxx.jpg is visible on the screen as a thumbnail in the File Explorer window, and other programs will happily find and display it. Yesterday I tried uninstalling/reinstalling from the original PSP disc, it made no difference. I tried reverting Vista to a restore point prior to the BSOD, and uninstalling/reinstalling again. PSP then worked fine.

After switching on this morning, PSP is refusing to communicate again, the same problem as before. I have looked in Task Manager, and although it shows no instances of PSP running, there is an entry under the Services tab for each time I have tried to start it, three so far. Does this give any of you clever people a clue as to what might be going on, please ?

Corel would not offer any advice. They no longer support version X. They did try to get me to buy the latest version, whilst pointing out that it will not run on Vista. So, par for the course then.

I have a suspicion that this is not a problem with PSP as such, rather it may be something to do with Windows, maybe damage caused by the BSOD ? I have not tried every single program on the machine to see if they will open, but all the major ones do - Outlook, Webroot, Google Chrome, Word... I have even revived an old copy of Photoshop Elements in the absence of PSP and it runs OK, but frankly I much prefer my PSP which I have used since it was shareware. I know just what to do to have the effect I want without having to think about it.

Thanks for any help.

Have you done a system file check yet. Almost always a good place to start

Go to Start Search Box and type CMD
While holding down CTRL and SHIFT press ENTER (opens as administrator)
(or right click and click run as administrator)
In the box that opens type
SFC /SCANNOW and press ENTER (note the gap before/)
If errors are found restart your computer and do the scan again.
Run it up to three times.

Then right click on C: and click properties, tools, error checking, check the volume for errors.
Tick both boxes and reboot

Hi, and many thanks for the suggestion. I have now. The first run got: " Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details included in CBS.log..." etc. Found and tried to open CBS.log (5.17 MB) but access denied even after giving Administrator permission through UAC. But File Explorer let me copy the file and paste it to a USB drive as CBS1.log, and I can open it there.

The CBS folder also contains a CBS.persist.log [50.0 MB] dated 08/08/2016.

The second run produced the same message and over-wrote (or so I thought) CBS.log. I copied that to my USB stick too, as CBS2.log (5.50 MB).

Third time around, and file CBS3.log (5.84 MB) is now on the stick. I see the log files are getting progressively bigger.

I then spent some time reading CBS3.log and trying to stay awake (:sleepy:). Obviously I haven't a clue what it all means, but I am looking for lines that indicate that corrupt files can't be repaired so we know which ones they are, right ? The first thing I discovered was that CBS.log does not overwrite previous versions, it appends to them. And eventually I discovered that really, all I had to do was search for the text "cannot repair". The only item which can't be repaired is this one, though it tells me that 6 times. I hope it comes out legibly...

At this point I thought, "why don't I try PSP ?". Nope, still just the same, the service is running but not the application (:(). The log gave me the impression that a good many things had been repaired, mainly relating to obscure bits of Windows that I have never knowingly used.

Are you actually using Windows Sidebar? (Microsoft long ago recommended disabling it for security reasons.) In any case, it's hard to see how that could be related to your problem with Paint Shop Pro.

Have you tried running Paint Shop Pro with Webroot disabled? Were any Windows updates installed just before your trouble began?

No. Is it the irritating thing that used to pop out from the side of the screen? A waste of space.

Have you tried running Paint Shop Pro with Webroot disabled?

Yes. No difference. And they have been running happily together every day for years now. If Webroot finds a problem, it tells you about it before you can proceed (if you still want to).

>>

Most recent in the list is Security update for Vista, installed 9 August. There may have been another since then which was disposed of when I reverted to a previous restore point but I doubt it, as Win Update says the PC is up-to-date. PSP was used successfully every day until 21 August. Incidentally, I have tried some more of my programs: Canon scanner utilities, Sqlite Expert, Free Commander XE, a couple of simple proglets I wrote myself, VNC Viewer, Spotify, Dropbox, Mailwasher, VLC Media Player, TextPad, Internet Explorer - all alive and well.

In CMD run as administrator type the following to get the relevant part of the CBS Log

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log

or

notepad C:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log

Did you do the disc check part as well?

There are 1045 "[SR]" instances. some are in the third post in this thread. So I redirected output to file like so:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log > H:\SR_Search.txt, where H: is the USB drive I mentioned above. File attached, enjoy.

I'm assuming the "disk check" invokes CHKDSK in some form or other, and that will have to be done overnight. There is a post-it on the edge of the screen. I am quite capable of not noticing it, I tend to be tired at bedtime.

Good news, everybody ! I ran the disk check overnight, the PC restarted after about 3 hours +, and now PSP is back working again. If this system had a jumping-up-and-down yay-yay-yay smiley I would have inserted it at this point.

This is such a relief, especially after having run CHKDSK on half a dozen PCs many times over the years and never had it fix whatever it was that was causing the problem at the time.

I can send the full event log, but these look to be the relevant bits:

Cleaning up 41618 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 41618 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 41618 unused security descriptors.
...
Correcting errors in the master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribute.
Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.

And it also says I have no bad sectors, which is a relief.

Many thanks for your guidance :):):)
