I had been looking around the web for 2 months now trying to find an answer to why my Windows Media Player 11 stopped working and I kept getting the C00D11D2 error about proxy settings, permissions etc..
I noticed a common theme amongst people was that most of them had recieved an AIM update (6.0) prior to this happening.

I finally figured out what the problem was yesterday.

Apparently, this update cause the sound system to check the box "that enables 1 program to take full control (permissions) of sound on the computer.) Even though I had deleted AIM, it hadn't unchecked the box from the updates settings.

I suggest that you try the following:

Go to Start: Type in Sound.
Open up the Sound
You will see probably one of two speakers - If you have Vista Home then it should be the standard Sigmatel. Right click on it and go to Properities. I advanced, uncheck the box that says "allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"

My WMP 11 started working immediately.

I hope this works for you as well.

Good Luck

Click on it and make sure that the box which says "enable program to

Thanks man.

As I said, this fixed the problem. Plays perfectly now.

If anyone would like more help about this, feel free to let me know.

It sucked that it took me a month to work it out.

you are an incredible individual, i wouldn not have been able to figure that out for a good long time. hopefully microsoft starts learning these things from us and won't leave it up to us to have to work out all their quirks. i only installed the old aim (6.0) and still had the same problem, i wish aol would stop trying to take over my computer.

i have 64 bit vista..and your remedy does not work for me. cant find the box "take full control (permissions) of sound on the computer" help please

In Vista 64, steps are:

Control Panel->Sound
Right-click on the kind of sound you use
select properties
select the Advanced tab
uncheck "Allow applications to..."

Et voila, rendered simple and intuitive by the MS UI team

Re: Vista Windows Media Player Error Code C00D11D2 - AIM not Required for Error

... my Windows Media Player 11 stopped working and I kept getting the C00D11D2 error about proxy settings, permissions etc..

I just wanted to bump this because I just got a Vista system and had this same problem, but I did NOT get any AIM update, I don't have AIM at all. I only applied all the latest Windoze updates as directed.

My problem was that I couldn't play an MPEG-1 file from my CD/DVD drive, even though it was non-copyright protected. The funny thing was that while the warning box was up and telling me my problem, the video WAS playing behind it! I guess that was just Vista thumbing its nose at me.

Your solution was the exact solution, worked perfectly. Makes me wonder who is (still) setting us up to have this problem. Gotta be someone who told something to do this to our systems.

I had similar problem with wmp. The problem is due to the Panda anti-virus blocking wmplayer.exe. I recently installed the latest version of Panda anti-virus. Prior to this wmp was working alright. Now it won't play my videos and wma files. I uninstalled panda and installed another anti-virus program and, voila, wmp is back in business again. I hope this helps other users having the same problem. You don't have to run a slew of other utility programs, such as registry cleaners, etc.
