Help! No sound and unable to update driver since SP1

I was hoping SP1 would solve a lot of issues I've been having (see related link below)

http://www.vistax64.com/media-center/137811-wmc-wmp11-keep-crashing.html

Now it seems a new (possibly related?) issue has surfaced. Since installing SP1 I have no sound at all.

In device manager under sound there is a PnP audio device listed but this is wrong, it should be the onboard audio (I believe it used to say CMedia...something). It has an exclamation mark and won't update the driver.

I have found MANY copies of the same solution on the net (uninstall device, scan for hardware changes, reinstall driver) Fix for Sound Missing or No Sound after Vista SP1 install | Windows Reference

BUT....it won't install the driver. I tried downloading the driver from my mobo manufacturer's site but I keep getting a failed install.

Can anyone help please? I really, really don't want to have to format again. Thank you :)

Wapwap:

From reading your post, you've found the same solutions to the issue that I've found. So my guess is that something else is in play here. My advice would be to have the gurus at Microsoft kick this one around and find a solution. They are giving everyone free tech support for SP1. Here's the link: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&x=8&y=7&prid=11274&gprid=500921

You also mentioned that the driver won't install. Is there any error message being generated when this happens?

Hopefully a solution can be found soon.

Thanks for replying Joe.

When I try to reinstall the driver via Device Manager it says:
"Device driver software was not successfully installed. Please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed....PnP Audio Device...Failed." (Yet I don't have a PnP audio device, I have onboard audio.)

When I try to install the C-Media driver software that I downloaded from my mobo manufacturer's site, all I get is "Install Failed!"

Thanks for the link, I have emailed Microsoft and I'll post the response when I get it.

Grrrrrrrr!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
After several days of emails going back and forth to Microsoft, giving me steps to follow that I already told them I have done, their verdict is:

"since this the C-Media driver from Asus is for Vista RTM instead of the SP1, maybe the driver does not apply to this version. In order for a device to function on a specific Operating System, the proper driver should be installed. The driver provides an interface for communication between the hardware and the system. Without the appropriate driver, the device will not be recognized or work properly in Windows Vista SP1. Thank you for your understanding.
At this situation, I suggest that you contact the Asus Support first, please check if there is an updated C-Media driver for Vista SP1. For your reference, I have included the contact information below:"

Or, in one sentence: 'It's not our fault Asus haven't updated the driver for our new service pack.'

I'm sooooo ******* frustrated with Microsoft and Vista. I really wanted to love Vista, but I couldn't hate an OS more!

Did your audio work fine before sp1. I ask because my Asus W3J has had no sound since upgrading to Vista 64 and was considering SP1 until I read this. I have no error messages and have tried 4 different audio drivers with no success.

My Computer

Yes I did have sound before SP1 but I did have other sound related issues...Media Player and Media Center nor working (or any other media player I tried actually).

I'm afraid they are kinda right about drivers...it's up to the manufacturer to keep up.

It seems you know your way around the PC but to cover the basics and a probable..

For onboard sound though you need to make sure it's turned on in your BIOS settings (eg. intergrated peripherals). Check there.

Just in case: If you have installed one of those free Mega codec packs I suggest you remove them and see if that sorts out sound problems.

My Computer

Since we didn't hear back can I presume the suggest sorted your problem or do you still have sound problems.

I have anpther possible soloution for you that might work

My Computer

Clevo,

I was unable to find a setting within BIOS that referred to the sound being turned on. Another couple of odd things:
- the volume controls (FUnction F10,F11,F12) do not work.
- when i try and identify the driver manufacturer through the control panel, it says Microsoft?

Any thoughts? Thanks.
