Hey! I am desperate for help, my sound stopped working suddenly - I don't even get the windows start-up sound anymore. I have tried upating drivers and that did not work, i think i see my problem: I have attached a capture of my sound screen from the control panel. It says my speakers are not plugged in but i use an HDMI cable to my monitor which is also my speakers and my monitor works fine.

THANKS!!!

Hello lisa0922,
Can you go to Device Manager, and check to see if there are any yellow triangles anywhere.
Take a look and post your results.

Hey Stoneys-nutz!!!

The only triangles are under network adapters, not sound.

Try going to Device Manager and un-installing the sound drivers, reboot and Vista will re-install the drivers.
Your sound card could be broken, but it would be rare if it was.

I've tried that already, I even read about un installing, rebooting, uninstalling again and then downloading the drivers from the realtek wesite but even that didn't work!

Do you have another set of speakers you can try, check all the connections, both outside and inside the case, also, check that there is nothing muted, and check the volume control, i know, your thinking volume control ?, is he mad, but you would be surprised at the things we come across here.
Is the sound card on the Motherboard, or on a separate card ?. If it is a PCI card, try re-seating it.
How do the speakers connect to the PC ?.
Has the PC been moved recently ?.
Have you installed/un-installed any hardware/software recently ?.
These are all things you have probably done, but just recheck everything.
If you have checked everything, and its still not working, then you need to consider the sound card itself.

Omg I was so fed up. I thought my integrated sound on my motherboad had went out too. Try unstalling updating nothing work. Even tried disabling front panel sound or whatever.

Saw on many forums but no one seems to had a fix. Im sure I just didnt look hard enough haha. Anyways I didnt want to go installing everything again like my motherboard drivers.

All I did was flashed back my bios on my motherboard (factory settings) and boom the Realtek sound icon and everything was back to normal. I got sound again. :))))
