Go into device manager and look for sound or microphone and update latest driver.
Best bet is to go to Dell Inspiron 6400 and get latest driver downloads or Dell tech support and ask for help with you microphone.

Check in Device Manager for display or peripherals and see if you see microphone there.
If not I in control manager/sound/recording there should be a integrated microphone array that should be clicked on along with External mic.
I have an HP laptop and looking at the set up now....see if that is how yours is setup .
Post back as I will be here most of the afternoon.

I have looked at both pictures, the drivers are fine, it wouldn't show anything there if the drivers weren't installed, if your microphone isn't being picked up then there might be a problem with the jack itself.

Didn't open pictures but doesn't you laptop come with a built in cam and microphone?
If it does I would give Dell a call or go to Dell forum and post your question there.
Run Speecy( from Piriform) or SIW to show complete system spec's. Both are free software.

The angels are here as both of those programs are free.
I have used them for years.
piriform.com will get you to the free version of speecy a CCleaner.

Will post links later as I have to get wife ready for bath and lunch.
Today is her day to get out of bed and out of the house.

Hi,, sorry to hear you have problems.
You have tried to download various drivers without success?
Would you clckl on this link & see if it helps:-
How to Install a Sigmatel Audio Driver | eHow.com

You may also find this link of interest where the input of your service tag will tell you what updates are available for your particular computer.
Among the updates available for the inspiron 6400 is a sigmatel driver.
Drivers & Downloads

Do you have the updated version of the Dell Support Centre on your machine?
It should have come with it pre-installed, or an earlier version of it?

If not please download from this link:-
Dell Support Center | Dell
The program will help keep your system up to date.
It scans and tests system hardware, also provides, depending on model, automated fixes for configuration issues.

I have used it a number of times and found it useful.
Hope these can be of some assistance to you.
Thank you.

On the recording tab (your first photo) right click the microphone and go to properties
You should be able to select it from there.
