Audio won't work.

Ok so a few days ago when I logged onto my labtop it let me put in my password and loaded but then went to a black screen with the mouse arrow showing up. It never loaded anything else I tried restarting it,taking the battery out didn't fix it so I rebooted my labtop fixing it.

Problem now is that my audio won't work and has a red x over the speaker logo and a message saying "Windows Audio has stopped working" keeps popping up and gives me option of checking online for a solution but it doesn't fix anything.

I've tried updated the drivers, uninstalled them and re installed them but still nothing.

Any ideas?

Laptop is a HP Pavilion dv5t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
& running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

From the start menu type in services.msc. Look for the windows audio service. Make sure that it is on and set to turn on automatically. If it isn't on you can start it.

Also I suggest that you update to service pack 2.

Forgot to mention I already check the services in my post but I did this again and it said it was stopped I started it went to play a video and it again came up saying windows audio has stopped again.

Gonna download the service pack 2 but will that fix the audio?

Try SFC. From the start menu type in cmd, right click on command prompt and select run as administrator. Then in the command prompt type in sfc /scannow. Clicking on run as administrator is required.

Didn't do anything to fix it.

I did so it said "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

I was gonna copy and paste the CBS Log in a document and attach it but the forum wouldn't let me.

I'd paste it here but its pretty long.

Have you run a full scan of your system with your anti-virus software and malwarebytes? If not, try that. It seems that DEP is protecting you from something.

I earlier said that it sounds like DEP is protecting you from something. However, it could be UnThreat has a firewall. I couldn't find an answer on that. You could try a clean boot to see if you can reset the Windows Audio Service and view a video.

I disabled and even uninstalled UnThreat and it still didn't work. Also not sure what a DEP is or how to check it. How do I do a clean boot?

My Computer

DEP is Data Execution Protection. Open the Windows help and type in DEP. It explains the whole thing.

To do a clean boot-

Run msconfig.exe.

In the Services tab, check the box "hide all Microsoft....". Then, check the box "disable all".

In the Startup tab, check the box "disable all".

Reboot.

Note that this will disable a standalone anti-virus program so, it's best to run msconfig.exe again and restore everything to default and reboot as soon as you have checked out the audio issue.

When I said to restore everything to default, I meant uncheck the boxes you previously checked. Hopefully, you've done that.

When you restarted the Windows Audio Service, did you also restart the Windows Audio Endpoint Service?

I don't think so because when you click "hide all Microsoft services" both Windows Audio Services and Windowsa Audio Endpoint Service go away.

However both under the status say they are running.

Should I restart them both or not? Jw cause before you said not to restart Microsoft Services..

My Computer

Please don't mix things up. I asked you to do a clean boot using msconfig.exe by hiding all the Microsoft services and then clicking on Disable. This disabled all services except the Microsoft services. However, I asked you to go back to msconfig.exe and uncheck all three boxes (including the Startup items). You said you did that.

What I was referring to with regards to starting the Windows Audio Endpoint Service was, when you go into the Control Panel, Administrative Tools and click Services, you should restart the Windows Audio Endpoint Service as well as the Windows Audio service. The latter won't work without the former enabled.
