no sound

Gday fellas

I don't know where to post this problem, so I will explain it and if you could find the appropriate home for it please.

The problem is, I will be doing for example streaming an online TV show (watching it), then my husband will come in, and ask to BPAY a bill. (these are just examples). I will pause the show, open MSMoney, then a new tab, pay the bill, enter the details into MSMoney, save and exit.

I will then go back to watch my show, and there is no sound, so I go to CP to make sure my headset is still set as default, then out pops a rundll32 error. Cannot open the sound, or most things in the CP.

I press ctrl, alt, del and get a security error, I try an shut down windows using the start key, nothing happens. So I am forced to cold boot the machine.

Because for some reason none of my attachments will attach to this forum I have uploaded them all to dropbox.

These are my sfc /scannow and also the errors from Event Viewer, if anyone can shed some light onto why these rundll32 errors happen it would be appreciated.

Footnote: I am forced to cold boot because of the rundll32 on a random basis, i.e sometimes my machine will be left up and running for over a week, other times I can reboot and have it happen within a few hours.

I take it you don't have a Restore Point from before the error?

My feeling is that the streaming software runs at high priority and can't handle being interrupted by a lower priority process. If no Restore Point is available all I can think to try is a repair install.

btw I like the system specs. Funny stuff.

I don't use Winblows restore, I have Macrium and Paragon, I have re imaged my machine back to prior the rundll32 errors . If you read my OP you will see that I used the streaming as an example, it can happen at any time :cry:

Which part of my sys specs do you find funny? :sarc:

If you imaged back to before the issue I would suspect hardware. I'm a software guy and won't be much help with diagnosis. Perhaps a hw guru can lend a hand?

It's just my feeling because the image restore would tend to eliminate a software cause.

While watching here you may also want to post on a hw centric forum(if you haven't already.) Maybe Tom's Hardwre or one of the others. Vista Forums doesn't get the traffic it used to.

Sad :(, I know Vista wasn't and isn't every ones cup of tea, but I built this rig specifically for Vista, so other than the odd error that pops up, I really don't have a problem with it. I personally don't like Win7, I have a Retail version of it. The cost of having to keep up with the new OS's being brought out is ridiculous. Also being the PC savvy one in the home (my partner is useless when it comes to anything PC related), I prefer to keep us both on the same OS, so if he has a problem, I can usually figure it out.

I have done as you suggested and posted on Tom's Hardware Forum.

Thank you for your time :), I will keep this thread open in the hope that someone reads it and has an aha moment, or if Tom's Forum gives me a resolution I will post it.

Found this :-

Windows contains a file rundll32.exe that allows command line access to certain functions that are explicitly written to be available to this executable file.

I have a feeling tho that Nero is creating issues with the audio/video codec nero installs- it conflicts with vista

Rename following two files in folder:
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\"

NeVideo.ax -> NeVideo.ax.old
NeroVideoProc.ax -> NeroVideoProc.ax.old

No reboot is necessary.

Hopefully this should work

Will let you know if it fixes it :)

I had a desktop with Vista 32 bit Pre SP. I spent a lot of time tweaking it(that's how I ended up here.) Then I bought a desktop with Vista x64 SP1. I had no problems with it. Only thing I missed was the W7 Taskbar. I like progress bar buttons etc. It is a shame the forum is so moribund.

As for Nero that software has a lot of side effects. On some video forums if they know you have Nero InCD installed they'll just ignore your issues until it's removed. I'm optimistic you found the fix. :)

I have Nero installed yes, not InCD. No need for it. Not wanting to put the jinx on it but uptime 1day 7hrs 11mins 52secs.

And yes moribund indeed, it's okay if you can afford to keep updating OS and rig's, I cannot I am 49 and have been on a Pension for the past 19 years. Being a woman I am not adverse to spending money, but I see no point in wasting it either.

That is not to say I won't upgrade PC parts if I detect a failure coming on, but being the geek I am I tend to have spares of almost everything just in case. Because if it is going to die, it will usually do it on a Friday afternoon, and where I live in Australia PC parts are not readily available :(

I don't throw money around either. I hate this "version churning" going on with software. Firefox goes from 13 to 31 in what? 6 or 8 months? Crazy. I put W7 on my 32 bit Vista machine because I tried everything I could think of to get it to take SP1. It just wouldn't do it. I tried the beta and wanted to program the Progressbar Button thing. But I hated snap. I turned it off and wrote my own window movement in ahk so that all my Windows versions would act the same.

But yeah, no real reason to shun Vista as long is it has a service pack level greater than 0. I hate it when boards go into a coma. I'm on a video board where the traffic is so low what it amounts to is that the SysOp is just using it to post arguments against the movie industry copyright henchmen that made him avoid certain topics. Also related news. But nearly no posted problems. Really sad.

When I purchased my copy of Vista Ultimate, it was the Retail version, so if at any time my mobo dies, or I win lotto and decide to rebuild the insides (I love my CM Storm Black Sniper Case), I can without going to the hassle of getting Microsoft's permission for a key. I also bought the Retail version for my partner's desktop, that I once again built specifically for Vista. My CD's came with SP1 on them.

I will admit I get really annoyed with people who say why are you using Vista? get Winblows 7, I'm like give me a break I'm not made of money! :rolleyes:. ( I do have a Retail version of Winblows 7, but only the one copy ). I tried it and to be honest I didn't like it.

And yes FF man don't get me started on that, I still use it as my preferred browser, I upgraded it to their latest version, and then had to add so many plugins to get it to behave like FF v17. I ended up uninstalling it and rolling back to v17.
