Hooking up headphones

So I bought my son a pair of Fatboy headphones that said with inline mic. I suggested he buy one that said with mic included, but he said oh this one will work. We have a Dell Precision 390. It only came with one jack, so he hooked it into the jack with the earphone icon and he can hear the other players, but he no one can hear him if he speaks into the little button. I tried to plug it into the microphone jack, but that didn't seem to help. Do these not work on desktops and if so; how would I hook them up for him to play games with multiple players? Thanks.
