Cyber criminals are becoming more aggressive in attempting to sell fake anti-virus programs known as rogueware. In addition they are now combining rogueware with ransomware, hijacking users' computers and making them useless until victims purchase fake anti-virus programs, according to a new report by PandaLabs.

A company I do some work for didn't have an anti-virus on their system (for some god unknown reason) so one of the employees thought they would do the right thing and download one. Unfortunately they downloaded randsomware which reported 25 or so viruses and other malware on their system and then demanded $35 in order to remove them.

Well, considering that this single computer holds every detail about every customer (bank accounts, phone numbers, home addresses and so on) it was quite a big security issue. I think I spent the good part of two days fixing that one computer.

At least I got paid well.
