Oh NO! Security Problems with 'Akamai' downloads.

Hi All you fellow 'Forumers',
Another day, another problem, I'm certainly learning the hard way.

Last night in the forum I had problems with NvCpl.Dll Errors, missing Entry et.
Great advice from Richc, thanks, but still unresolved totally. But that will do for later in the day.

I decided to further check items for out of date drivers, software etc., and went on the Asus support site to check on motherboard 'bits & pieces'.

Downloaded the Asus support Wizard, and got security alert 'Active X' is a problem.
AKAMAI DOWNLOAD MANAGER was the instigator of this.

Tried to find it, but where the chips its gone I don't know!
Looked through all my files I can think of. Been to download Program Files, no luck,

Has anyone come across this before? Would appreciate guidance in this daily toil of 'Computer Education'. It's Sunday I shouldn't have Homework!! Thank's in advance.

Sorry that the DLL problem is not fully resolved, but this should get priority.

Run a full and updated Anti Virus Scan
Download and run Malwarebytes, full scan
Lets see one of them come up with the same conclusion.

It appears to be an add on to IE
Go To to tools then internet options
programs
manage add ons
You can remove it from there if you desire.

If The add on does not seem to be a a problem when you take the scans,. You may want to check to see if active x is activated

Edit of my first post, which is now deleted.

Full system scans are running as we speak. Plus full Malware scan.`

it was Secunia PSI that flagged it in the auto-check, very early this morning, like 3.30am.

Did the IE check very early on before this posting, file not found there.

Device manager check completed, only hidden component was 'non-plug & play devices.

Did the alterations to variables in System advanced settings/Environmental variables.

First Malware scan finished after 1hr 46mins. NO Malicious items found. That's encouraging.
Other scans & checks still running.

If the problem is the result of the Secnia warning, then just update active x. Its a warning that you must upadate not a warning that you have a virus or other problem.

Hi Richc,

Sorry, been away from computer for a while.I realise that it was a warning for update, and did try to do so.

When clicking on that tag it would not let me open the file, I got 'error message' - Error occured while trying to open the specific URL. Attempted several timed without success.

I next opened the drop-down list and opened the file to that software, as you know it gives you other details including tile location.
Also suggested that 'nasties' may be attached to this Activex file.

Went searching for the file but could not locate, hence the thread to Vista Forum. As it was my assumption that Trojans etc., could not have got in any other way.

I was also alerted, other than Secnia, from other security software auto checks, that flag anything suspicious.

I left the computer earlier running a very thorough, but slow and effective computer scan.

On return the print out revealed the usual tracking cookies & No less than 11 TROJANS were found in the computer. Dealt with by the software. Which was run the day before.

I will now try and find the elusive file! No doubt numbered not namrd, no date of entry, no product name, no easy way to find it.

I was thinking in terms of making sure that all the remnants of the old driver was remvoved. I dont remember the specifics of that thread or why I thought it was necessary. There was probably a situation that you could not install a new driver.

I can't exactly remember either, you just mentioned that ifI was still having trouble, you had some specialised software!

Man, its NOT surprising that you don't particularly remember the thread the 1000's of posts you must make in a day!

Ok to refresh your memory. You had a problem installing a graphics driver. I thought that the reason might be that the old one was not completely removed.

Okay, rename HijackThis.exe to kesume.exe. You will have to do this by right clicking on Hijackthis.exe, then click on "rename" in the dropdown list.

Now once again, right click on (now renamed to) kesume.exe and choose to run as Administrator. When the log appears in notepad (wait for it), then copy and paste it.

Jacee,
Hi sorry for the delay, dragged away from computes for other essential work.
Below, I have outlined what I have encountered.

Highjack

Window.
For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. Is any highjacked domains are in this file, HighjackThis may not be able to fix this.

`if that happens you need to edit this file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:
notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HighjackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as ‘hosts’`with quotes) and reboot.

For Vista: simply, exit HighjackThis, Right click on the HighjackThis icon,, choose ‘Run as administrator’.

OK Button.

On pressing OK button small window asking ‘Do you want to create a new file’. Because:-

Warning triangle.
Cannot find the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HighjackThis.log file.

What next?
If I say yes new file, does not save.
If no, does not work.
Closing Highjack, drop-down no ‘Administrator’ tag anywhere.
Administrator tag absent anywhere in any drop-downs, maybe I’m on different system, or am missing something?

I can get the readout in Highjack, a blank \’onenote’ behind, then the above occurs, just can’t marry the two together.
I am sure my inexperience in working with computer systems and processes contributes to my capacity to understanding.
I will continue to try and resolve the conflict.

Hi Richc,
I'm Still trying to locate that mystery file that came in the recent download of 'Akamai'

I have scoured the program files with no luck, hidden files- same. Not in IE.

Taken hours,(probably because I don't really know what I'm looking for)) but, I may have found it

these are file name/no's of maybe bad file.
(8FFBE65D-2C9C-4669-84BD-5829DC0B603C)
Unknown\4kb\Creation date-none\Version;1.0.0.29

In Downloaded program files. About the same rating of 4kb, as shown on Secunia Register. No date of entry & very little or no other info.
I assume that if good/legit file it would have a name to it, right?

Two other files below it have the correct date and are ActiveX files. But unknown origin.

Value you your opinion.
