Failure-Security Options Message

When I boot up and after I log on, the screen immediately goes black and then I get the message that says: "Failure-Security Options", the Message header states: Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog. I have googled on how to fix this but have had no luck so I'm hopeful that Vista Forums can help me. I have tried a system restore and the problem still exists. Anyone know how to fix this?

Welcome
I must be honest, and admit that I have not heard of your particular problem before. After a bit of research online and based on my experience. I think that this solution presented in Geeks to Go, will offer the most potential

After trying everything I found on the net, I did some extra research and finally it worked.

1. IF YOU ARE FEELING LUCKY:
start windows on safe mode, press start and type 'msconfig' in the search/run box. go to the services tab, find the service 'superfetch' and uncheck the box next to it. Click OK and restart normally (If you have exactly the same problem I had - this should fix it).

2. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK:
start windows on safe mode, press start and type 'msconfig' in the search/run box. go to the services tab and click 'disable all'. Go to the 'startup' tab and click 'disable all'. Restar windows normally. If everything seems to be OK (many applications will not work now, and you will not have sound, but the important thing is that the initial problem is fixed), you just have to find which of the services or startup items is the culprit.
the quickest way is to check half of the options every time: check all the startup items and restart - if that's OK, they are all good, and the culprit is one of the services, otherwise - one of the startup items is to blame. So now we know if it's a service or a startup item.
Lets' assume it's a service (the process is the same for each of the options). Enable all the startup items and HALF of the services, to if the bad one is in the first half of the list or the second. From here on you need to keep narrowing your search, of of the bad section each time, until you find the one bad service...

Hello,

I tried option 1 and it did not work. However, I guess I will go with option 2 and figure out if it's a service or startup. The only thing is that there are A LOT of services and it could take forever. Thank you for the help.

My Computer

I had the most hope for method 2. What you are doing is checking to see what service is actually causing the problem, due to conflicts. Good luck

I did have luck with option 2 and it turns out the culprit was a service that was holding everything up and making the screen black out. In fact, it was more than 1 culprit so I have them disabled right now and the computer works fine. Do you have any advice for me to prevent that from happening again? Thank you!

My Computer

Can you tell me the names of the problem services?
Im glad that at least part of the problem is solved.

So far the 2 culprits are identified as:

Windows Live ID Sign-in
Windows Presentation

I still have 8 services to check and among those last 8 I believe is 1 more culprit! Thanks!

@ Richc46,

I've identified the final culprit or "Bad Service" and that brings the total to 3, the 3rd one was WRSVC (Webroot). I've stopped the 3 services, what else should I do if any? Is there files attached to these somewhere in my hard drive? Let me know and I thank you for the help.

My Computer

I would uninstall Webroot and use Microsoft Security Essentials and leave the other services off. YOu should be ok.

Of course...one more problem. I downloaded MSE, uninstalled Webroot. Once it was removed I installed MSE. The only thing is now that I got a notification saying Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x800106ba. A problem caused the programs service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support for how to start a service manually. Any Idea what the problem is?

My Computer

The only problem is to stop the notification. Defender is not suppose to run with MSE. Defender is inculded with MSE. Try a reboot.
