i cancelled mcafee many months ago. installed avast every thing is good but.i didn't manually uninstall any thing from the previous mcafee instalation. of course i'm not paying for mcafee but i still get updates.it still in the services window and most is on automatic.it still pops up awarning window in the lower right about a website that might be bad.it shows up in the task manager at 2'984k.it's still in programs>mcafee>agent. is this still using cpu and should i uninstall it ?

It is a bad idea to have 2 antivirus programs installed because they can conflict.

Not so much a case of 'can', as of 'will certainly' conflict, eventually.

Even if uninstalled using the Control Panel, many AV's will still leave behind sufficient residuals to interfere, possibly months or years later. Just upgrading some AV's is inadvisable without uninstalling and cleaning the original (NIS is a good example - some versions just couldn't be upgraded properly without cleanup).
