Hello Topcat, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This is strange. You might see if you can use Recuva or ShadowExplorer to recover these files from their folder locations.

Running a sfc /scannow command should restore the default sample pictures included in Vista.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Just for the heck of it, look under "Documents and Settings" to see if another user in installed. Look there, as well as Administrator.

Hi Topcat69,

A picture is a file. Files (pictures) are stored in folders.

Do you mean:
have done this every "folder" that had photos in are empty

Maybe try changing the following settings to see "everything" in your folders:

- Open Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View
- Check: Show hidden files and folders.
- Uncheck: Hide extensions for known file types, Hide protected operating system files.

Thank you for keeping this old thread up. I just had this happen. I was beside myself thinking I lost all my pictures and documents. I used ShadowExplorer.com and it worked like a charm!!! Everything is recovered!!!! I am so very relieved!!!!

I wasn't aware of this ShadowExplorer tool. Very interesting. So, Windows keeps some point-in-time copies of any files that are deleted or modified, no matter the type or size? If that is the case, I wonder if it explains why the available free space on the hard drive fluctuates for no apparent reason. As shadow copies are made and then later expired/removed, it would explain it.
