Blue circle of doom

I have Vista Home Premium on my computer and from time to time I try and do
something and the little blue circle that tells you that vista is doing
something will come up and just keep going and going God only knows what
Vista is doing and why it's locking up and the only way to stop it is to
manually press my power button and dump my computer. Why is it doing this.

There is no way to answer your question with so little information. Perhaps
you have a ton of programs/processes running in the background. Perhaps you
don't have enough memory (2GB for Vista is right for "normal" use).
