Can I disable Parental Controls?

M

Marisa

#1
I have Windows Vista Ultimate.
Every time I turn on my computer, a little pop up window tells me to set a
password for Parental Controls.
HOWEVER, I do not need Parental Controls - I am the only user of the
computer and I have not activated the Guest Account or created any other user
account.
How can I stop this annoying pop up window from popping up EVERY time I turn
on my computer? Disabling Parental Controls? How do I do it?

Hi Marisa,

Check in Parental Controls to make sure it is turned off. If that does not help, you can disable the "Parental Controls" service. This tutorial will show you how to do both. (See: step 6 and Service at top)

This did NOT work, Dobos, because I have Vista: when I click the account, a
pop-up windows asks if I want to give the account a password... No other
options to turn Parental Controls off are available there. Thanks, anyway...

Annoying pop-up windows

Marisa,

If you do not want to use Parental Controls, you can Stop and Disable the "Parental Controls" service to get rid of the pop-up.

Re: Annoying pop-up windows

Make sure that none of the Parental Controls are turned on. You may be able
to completely remove the parental controls component through the add/remove
windows components tool.

Re: Annoying pop-up windows

i think if you go into control panel and click on security center then on the left side
click on change the way security center alerts me . then don't notify me and don't display the icon. that may stop it for you

Re: Annoying pop-up windows

marisa, try turning User Account Control off, go to control panel, user
accounts, turn user accounts on or off, choose off. general opinion is
this does not compromise security on your computer, it just means vista
wont nag you every time you run/install a program, which we all do at
our own risk anyway. hope this works for you.

>>>does not compromise security on your computer<<<
What do you think UAC does?
You turn it off you disable IE's protected mode and other unforeseen
problems can and will occur.

Re: Annoying pop-up windows

ok, microsoft says uac is wonderful etc etc, but i want to pick my own
levels of security. every version of windows and its features are great
when the work, but when you get problems that are so complex to resolve
it's time to turn them off. there is a mountain of non-microsoft
software that can make your computer secure, if it screws with you
uninstall it.

Re: Annoying pop-up windows

You do as you please, but you advised the OP and I quote:

>>>general opinion is this does not compromise security on your computer<<<
Where do you find it's the general opinion?
Where do you find it DOES NOT compromise security on a users system?
What do you think UAC is for?

It's a little annoying at times, but it is a great new security feature and
unless you can back up your facts please don't advise other users to
compromise their systems based on your opinions.

Re: Annoying pop-up windows

just google, "Is UAC any good" and you will find many different opinions
on UAC, i admit security is important, so is having a pc that is not
frustrating to use. i even found an article on the net about microsoft
encouraging software companies to develop programs that makes UAC more
user friendly(they know it's needs work)

Re: Annoying pop-up windows

heres another idea. go to control panel and then administrative tools. go to
services and find the entry "Parental Controls". if there is an uninstall
option, do it. if not then make sure it is "disabled". Then run msconfig and
select the services tab and make sure that it isn't set to start anywhere in
there. I hope this helps,
guitardude

RE: Annoying pop-up windows

I had this same problem after I made an acct to see how it worked... after I
deleted the user I kept getting that same annoying popup... so I remade the
acct that I tested with before... clicked "turn on Parental Control" but
then turned it back off and clicked ok... then I restarted and went to
"C:\Users\" and deleted the test acct folder associated with the acct I
made... I disabled the Service "Parental Control" in the Admin Tools, and
tada rebooted again and no popup!
