Cannot connect to the internet:Identifying... Access: Local Only

I have had this issue for 3 days now, and have searched numerous forums and tried many solutions, but nothing has helped.

On my laptop, whether using a wired or wireless connection, my computer will not access the internet. It seems to access the router/modem (Local Only), but will forever say that it is "Identifying...."

I have tried various regedits, safemode (result is the same), turn off IPv6, among other things. I don't know a lot about computers, but know enough to follow these directions when I read them.

If there are any other suggestions out there I would be forever grateful, as this has been unbelievably frustrating.

Thanks in advance.

In Sevices, check if DNS Client is enabled. Go to control panel, administrator tools, and right click services to see .

Thanks for your quick replies!

Startup type: Automatic
Service status: Stopped

I clicked START button and get this message: Windows could not start the DNS client service. Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.

Hmmm, look in Device Manager , and check your network drivers . Network Adapters, expand the tree and make sure drivers are installed/updated

Under Network adapters I have four items:

Bluetooth Device
Bluetooth Device
Intel(R) 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection
Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

They all claim to be "working properly" per the Properties.

I'm working through these steps now.

I ran the scannow and got this result:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

I ran verifyonly

i have the sfcdetails log, with 1000 lines or so of text. There appear to be about 40 files that could not be repaired, or could not be verified

Something else also, Zone Alarm can sometimes cause issues. Do you use that ?

No, i don't have Zone Alarm.

I also uninstalled all antivirus and similar type software. I saw elsewhere people had issues with Zone Alarm, Norton, and possibly a few others.

If I install Windows 7 over my current Vista, any chance that would rectify the problem?

I can only think of one way, Put in a Linux Ubuntu, it comes with Firefox. If you can get online with that, i would assume your hardware is working. Make a CD and boot off of it , not install, and see if you can access the internet with it . I know of one site that has hard ware diagnostics but, i did not see of any for the networking cards.

Yard Dog - just wanted tot thank you for your time. I gave in and installed Windows 7, and everything seems to work OK. Still not sure what the specific problem was, but I'm happy to have it rectified.

Thanks!

Well, first thing is make yourself a back up image to have in case the hard drive fails. At least you have something to put on another hard drive. Good luck and stay safe !!!
