Can't connect to networked Brother printer

I
#1
I have recently upgraded my main computer to Vista HP but now I can't connect
to my networked Brother printer which is connected to my XP-based "server"
computer - although it worked fine before the upgrade!

The printer is found in the network search and the pop-up is displayed to
agree to the installation of the printer driver but then I get the error:
Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed
(error 0x000003e3).

What does this mean?

Help please!

Try this, it worked for me on my Dell A940 & also on another member's Dell
A960 today. Let me know if it works or not.

After installing drivers, go to Control Panel > Printers
-Right click on the printer, go to Properties, then the Ports Tab. Disable
"Enable bidirectional support"
-Then, if yours is like mine, you can then print.

Thanks, J, but bidirectional support was not enabled! So, I'm still stuck.

The Brother is actually on a USB port on my "server" and, like I said, it
worked fine in an all XP environment, but Vista "cannot connect".

Can you access the files and folders on the XP PC from the Vista PC?

Did you work your way through:

Thanks, Cari - I'll check that out, but, yes, I can connect to the files on
the XP machine that hosts the printer.

Hi again, Cari,

I worked through that with no change! I have access to an HP photosmart 7762
also connected to the same XP computer - but I still get the same error when
trying to connect to the Brother HL1230 - it tries to install the driver over
the network then reports the 0x000003e3 error - which I've searched the MS
site for but can't find, so I don't know what it means!

this means
E:\>winerror 0x000003e3
995 ERROR_OPERATION_ABORTED <--> 0xc0000120 STATUS_CANCELLED

Normally this is due to incompatible drivers.

Try installing Vista drivers on the XP machine. Sometimes the vendor does
not support this. In this case you will need to create a local printer on
the Vista machine that targets a Local Port with the name
\\XPmachine\printershare. If you have spaces in the printer share name
rename to one word.

Didn't do me any good. Was the problem solved with the drivers on the XP
machine or with the local port. I tried the local port on my vista machine
but when I put in \\myxp\printershare it just said the network name cannot be
found. I can find the printer when browsing.

I am worried if the problem has to be solved by loading vista drivers onto
my xp machine it will stop all my other printers working.

Hi there everyone. I am having a similar problem to the one above and I can't find a solution for it. So after hours of trying, I resorted to Google and found this fine forum and I am hoping someone here might be able to help me out.

My problem is that I have Vista Ultimate 64bit installed on my main machine and I have a Dell A940 printer connected to it via USB. I have a laptop and another PC networked to my main machine as well. Both the laptop and the 2nd PC are running Vista Ultimate 32bit.

The network works fine and I am able to share folders and internet connection without any problems but for some reason I can't get the networked computers to print on the A940. I have installed the latest Dell A940 64bit driver on my main machine and I have installed the latest 32bit drivers on the other two computers.

I have setup printer sharing as per all instructions in http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx and the installed A940 indeed comes up as the default printer and shows as "shared" on the main machine and it also appears in the "Printers" window on both the networked computers.

When I try to print a test page on either of the networked computers a message comes up saying that a test page has been sent to my printer, then the Dell ink warning box comes up to show that the printer is low on ink but it doesn't print. When I open the Printer Queue it shows the Test Page is there but the status shows "Error - Printing" I have checked that it's not the ink cartridges as I am able to print a test page from the main machine its just not working from either of the networked computers.

I have tried unticking the box that "jmettee" mentioned but that hasn't fixed it. The fact that the networked computers can detect that the printer is low on ink indicates that everything is setup correctly so why won't it print???

Also I have tried going into Network > Main Computer > Printers then right clicked on the shared printer and clicked "Connect" and it comes up with an error message similar to the OP. Message is: Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000002)

I am at the end of my tether with this as I have tried everything so I turn to you guys and gals. Please if anyone knows a work around for this, please let me know. Cheers.
