disappearing sent items

I've read through previously posted comments on this problem without reading
of an effective answer. I've been using Mail with my VISTA system with
McAfee installed without any problems for over a year. Just this week all
the sent items in my Sent folder have disappeared, even though properties
indicates that 825 items remain in this folder. I have already confirmed
that all the right options are selected to make all sent items go into this
folder and remain visible, as they have been doing up until this week. Mail
still goes out, but also remains listed in the outbox list, and when I click
to open a particular outbox item, I get the message that the contents of that
message cannot be found! Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes a while before symptoms start showing.
The only way you can prove or disprove that McAfee is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

Another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more
resistant to the adverse effects of aggressive antivirus products:

In any case you must disable any antivirus email scanning, for the reason
explained here:

I chose the upgrade to Windows Live Mail option which seems to have done the
trick, although I haven't been able to figure out how to import my contacts
list yet. Thanks so much for the advice.
I had been reluctant to uninstall the McAfee since it was a preinstalled
item and I don't have the oringinal for reinstallation. I guess too I'm
still skeptical that it would take so long to cause a problem . Thanks
again.

Good to hear your new WLM seems to be working properly.
WLM uses two different kinds of contacts, a non-synced set for times
when you don't want to use the Live ID login, and a set that is synced
with any one of your Hotmail or Live.com accounts. If interested in the
latter, post your request in the WLM newsgroup. To do a one-time import
of contacts from WM: in WLM click Contacts, press the Alt key to get the
File menu bar, File, Import, "Address book for current Windows user".
