Disc check for consistency?

Hello,

When i try to start my laptop (hp pavillion dv2000), after the initial
windows logo, i get a black screen saying,
"Checking file system on C:
The type of file system is NTFS

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency..."
And then you may cancel the disk check, the check will begin in so many
seconds, yada yada yada.
I tried cancelling the disk check, but it didn't work, and the ticker kept
counting the seconds before it would start the check. Once the check starts,
it says "CHDSK is verifying files (Stage 1 of 3)" and then there's a counter
with the percent completed and how many file records processed. Around 6-8%
the check freezes (i've left it for over 10 mins and nothing else happens)
and i shut down my computer. I've done this three or four times and i keep
getting the same result.
What can i do?

Thank you

Is there any disk activity while it's "freezed"? My PC usually waits 15
minutes at the beginning of stage 2 (it reads the index table or I don't know
what), and during that period it reads from the disk like crazy. If there is
REALLY nothing happening, then you'll have to check that disk with another
program.

Run a hard drive diagnostic. Get the diagnostic utility from the hard
drive mftr.'s website or use Seagate's SeaTools Desktop. You will create
a bootable CD with the file you download. Third-party burning software
was necessary for this in XP; I don't know if that is the case still in
Vista.

Then boot your computer with the CD you created and run a thorough test
on the hard drive. If it fails any physical tests, contact HP for
replacement.

If you don't want to go through all this, just call HP tech support for
replacement.

Thanks, however, I don't know how to get past the disk check screen and to
the regular desktop where i can start running different diagnostic tests.

There is REALLY nothing happening. i don't even get to stage 2. How can i
move past the disk check screen to get to the desktop so i can check the disk
with another program?

Have you tried booting from the Vista DVD and going into the Repair menu,
where you can run chkdsk from a command prompt? As I recall, I once got out
of one of these loops that way.

I haven't tried that, but my vista dvd is across the country from where i am
right now. That's a good idea tho, thanks.

Tech support advised me that some time ago for some other issue. It worked
for me. (Well, that's the same chkdsk so I don't know whether it'll get you
to stage 2 or not)

You don't use a hard drive diagnostic from within Windows. You boot with
the CD you created and run the utility outside of the operating system.
You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS first.

It may not be the "same chkdsk" if it loads from the DVD and not from the
hard drive.

I had the same problem on my desktop and found the solution on this forum:

http://forums.thatcomputerguy.us/index.php?showtopic=13989&pid=83406&mode=threaded&start=

There seems to be a bug in aborting the disk check by pressing a key, on my
computer it didn't work with a USB keyboard but did work with a PS-2
keyboard. If your laptop has a PS-2 port, you might try that to boot and
then the register edit described above.
