I recently installed WLM on my computer. I can sign in when it loads with my
email address and password, but whenever I try to send and receive new
messages or send messages I get an error that says:

"

Unable to send or receive messages for the Hotmail account. The sign-in name
you entered doesn't exist, or your password is incorrect.

Server Error: 0x80048821
Server: 'http://mail.services.live.com/DeltaSync_v2.0.0/Sync.aspx'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x80048821

"

I went to the Tools/Accounts/(my email account)/Properties/server tab and
made sure that my full email address was being used, and it is.

Is there anything else I can change to fix this?

Contrary to what a reasonable person might assume, the sign-in prompt
when starting WLM has nothing to do with being able to send and receive
mail or even to get into the WLM program. To find out what this does,
use Help, View Help and search for "Signin".

As for checking your Tools, Accounts setting, make sure that the
password is correct. Clear the field and enter it again.

If that doesn't help, what version of Windows are you using and what
version of IE?

Some email servers want you whole email address, and some only want the
part before the @ sign. Some won't accept usernames that contain a space
or a CAPITAL LETTER. Many require you to be careful about which
letters in your password are CAPITAL and which are lowercase. Many
give a rather vague error message about what's wrong with your username
and/or password if anything is.

Is that error message generated for a non-Hotmail account ?

fyi...WLM, afaik, should accept lower or upper case for a Live Id domains(hotmail.com, Live.com, Msn.com)

For some values of "many". I can't find a requirement, in RFC 2822, for case
sensitivity in email names. I suspect that any email server which requires
case sensitivity is not in compliance with RFC 2822. Which is not a "Good
Thing"® on the Internet.

RFC2822 doesn't explicitly say. What it does say:

addr-spec = local-part "@" domain

The local-part portion is a domain dependent string. In addresses,
it is simply interpreted on the particular host as a name of a
particular mailbox.

The local-part could be case sensitive if the mail server so desires.
As far as I know, none of the major mail services use case sensitive
names. A some years ago, I did run across a few small organizations
that were using Unix based systems with case sensitive mail boxes. I
suspect that they were using the built-in Unix mail commands without a
regular mail server.

The domain portion of the name is never case sensitive because Internet
domain names never are.

RFC2821 does say:

Any system that includes an SMTP server supporting mail relaying or
delivery MUST support the reserved mailbox "postmaster" as a case-
insensitive local name.

That again implies that other local names could be case sensitive.

I had the same problem with a client. Their password was 18 digits long,
however the windows live mail would work using the first 16 digits (leaving
the last two off)

Hope this helps.
