How secure/private is a Messenger chat session ?

Provided that I trust my chat partner in Windows Messenger, is the chat text
that we exchange secure/private from other's snooping on the internet ? and
is it secure/private from those MS employees/vendors that have access to
Messenger servers ?

With the exception of the actual login process, Messenger (and specifically the IMs) is not
encrypted.

The actual technical details of what's stored on Microsoft side has never been revealed,
beyond what's in the Privacy section of the Terms of Use:
