Is My Neighbor Hacking My Network?

#1
I use Wireless Mon 3.0 to look at whats going on wireless around my neighborhood. Mostly to see if I can get on an unused channel.

This guy next door follows me to every channel I go to. I do not have my router auto selecting channels.

I run WPA2 Personal AES with a 64 character shared key.

Why else would his router stay with mine channel wise?

Hide your SSID and make sure you have a solid password.

Solidd password? My shared key is 64 characters long.

I'll try the hidden thing.

Hello TheRock,

Also check your router's network filter settings to see if you can turn on "MAC filtering" so that you can only allow a MAC address from the computers you want to have access to the network.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi
The fact that is using the same channel means nothing what so ever.
Infrastructure Router can not connect to another Router, and Client Wireless
computer adapt automatically to any channel so what ever is Router is On is
irrelevant.
Do not touch your SSID since the only thing that it would is destabilized
your Wireless.
With WPA2_AES you are secured. If this guy could brake WPA he would be in
big demand for big bucks by the top security companies and will have time to
deal with your network ;)

Thanks Jack,

I'm curious why his router follows my channel numbers around. There are several others near by that must be auto scanning channels because they are all (4 of them) on channel 6.
By looking him over I see is unsecured and uses a Linksys WRT150N.

Hi
Routers can not follow other devices channels.
If there is Auto channel it related to the Router's Wireless capacity to
switch channels auto and stop at the one with the strongest connection that
is established with a Wireless capable computer.
There are many Wireless' advice posts on the Internet that suggest to people
to switch from the crowded Channel 6 to less crowded channels and it might
be that your neighbor follows this advice too.

I hear you and understand. And my original question is he hacking me is in refference to he goes to what ever channel I go to. I find this VERY strange. If I go from 5 to 1 he will be there in a few minutes to an hour, it never fails. No matter where I go he goes. Strange if you ask me.
Heh!

Hello TheRock,

Did you also check your router's network filter settings to see if you can turn on "MAC filtering" yet? You can use it to allow MAC addresses from only the computers you want to have access to the network. No other computer can gain access with this setup unless manually allowed by you.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Ok You Guys,

I'm not going to be very popular for this but I just went into my neighbors router. I couldn't stand it seeing his router follow my channel around. I know this doesn't mean he was into me but curiosity had me.

He has a WRT150N unsecured with the factory log in still in place.

He is setup as it came out of the box. His firmware was old so I updated it for him.

I looked at his numbers and my logs and see no indication he was attempting to get into my system.

The channel scan option selection on the router is strange as you either have it in mixed where it defaults to auto scan with the options shaded out. Then if you toggle the mixed mode the shaded options become selectable and you can lock it to a channel.
There is no N & G combined only mode.

This makes me appreciate my old WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware. I now run a Trendnet TEW633gr that rocks in all areas.

Anyway I locked him to a good channel nobody is ever on to see if it changes again back to mine.

I worry mostly about being a photographer with files I want to keep private. I work at the desk and around the house on both wireless and eithernet so I try to keep an eye on all the possible holes.
