Live Mail doesn't recognize when email has been read from iPhone

K
#1
I've set up my iPhone to access my Windows Live Mail account. However when I
open and read a message on the iPhone the corresponding message on the server
(web) does not show that it has been read.

Who is the mail service provider, Hotmail?
Does the iPhone use POP, IMAP or HTTP access for that account?
The POP protocol doesn't feed client status back to the server.

Hotmail/Live, currently it's using POP but it has the capability to do Exchange

I can fill in some blanks..when the account is a Windows Live Hotmail account.

iPhone/iPod in its factory state has to use pop3 for any Hotmail account(Hotmail.com, Live.com, Msn.com). I.e. It only downloads
the Inbox contents like any other pop3 capable email client access a Hotmail account using the pop3 settings.

The iPhone/iPod Touch features for controlling the content on the Live/Hotmail server is:
Delete from Server = Never, Seven days, or When removed from the Inbox

A message downloaded will be handled as follows with each of these Delete from Server settings:
Never = stay in the web Inbox as an unread message
Seven days = stay in Inbox for seven days as an unread message(polling after 7 days moves it as unread to the web Deleted folder)
When removed from the Inbox(same as not leaving on server), moves it as unread to the web Deleted folder
*** For the latter two - Hotmail will empty the Deleted folder automatically after 5 days

For Deleted items on the iPhone/iPod an additional option is configurable to clean out the Trash folder(Deleted items) on the
iPhone/iPod
Deleted Messages = Never, after one day, one week, one month (applicable and configurable for each account in use on the
iPhone/iPod

So what you're telling me is there's no work around or fix?

Re: Live Mail doesn't recognize when email has been read from iPho

Not unless you want to change mail services.

Standard POP3 access doesn't mark a message as read on the mail server
when it's downloaded. You'd have the same problem with any POP3 mail
client.

Gmail, which doesn't follow standard POP3 rules, does mark downloaded
messages as read on the mail server. I'm not aware of any other major
POP3 providers that do that.

If you were using IMAP or DeltaSynch (HTTP) access, reading a message
via a client does mark it as read on the server. But Live (Hotmail)
doesn't support IMAP. It does support DeltaSynch, but I'm not aware of
any non-Microsoft mail clients that support it.

That is correct.
The iPhone/iPod Touch is not unique in this regard...it is also common for other email clients accessing Hotmail
accounts(hotmail.com, live.com, msn.com) when using the Pop3 protocol.

well thanks everyone for your help. I must say I do appreciate you all taking
the time to explain the issue. It's to bad msn mail won't work. Looks like
I'll give gmail a try. Or see if I can convince our IT guy to get connected
to Exchange at work. (I've got my work email routed to my msn acct now)

Re: Live Mail doesn't recognize when email has been read from iPho

One last question along the same topic; If this is common to the Pop3
protocol then how does it work with a Blackberry? My Blackberry would keep my
msn.com/live.com account in sync.

Re: Live Mail doesn't recognize when email has been read from iPho

Hello Everyone,

I have a related question. When i use my hotmail account directly through
the web, and i delete a message, that message is not deleted on the windows
mail client when I Sync.

Also, if i use one mail client on another computer, delete a message, it is
not deleted on my windows mail client.

What do i do to synchronize properly.

Would all of this work better on Gmail?

Is there a way to get IMAP back on my hotmail ... it was so good with
outlook express and now things suck!

Thanks
Tushar

Re: Live Mail doesn't recognize when email has been read from iPho

I ran into the same problem and finally purchased an iPhone app called mBox
Mail that accesses my Windows Live Mail/Hotmail account nicely. It only
costs a couple of $ and was well worth the cost since the built-in iPhone
email connectivity wouldn't work with Live Mail.
