What I do is, when the icons are where I want them, I right click on
any empty place on the desktop and select "refresh".

no you can't.. but if you want some icons to be shown only your desktop.. that you can do is create two profile and have the icons you want under your user desktop not all users desktop..
Note: this is only a recommendation, provide more information we are happy to help..

I think what I am looking for doesn't exist as a vist option. As I remember
it I think Windows 98 had a provision for locking the icons in position. I
don't see it on XP.
