Mapping a tape drive

I need to map a tape drive in Vista because the backup app only reads devices
that have a drive letter. How may I do this? Thanks!

You don't. Tape drives are not assigned drive letters.
A "good" backup application should be able to detect a tape drive from the Registry.

What is your tape drive and type and what is your un-named backup software ?

Thanks for your reply. I have an external USB drive and using PCBackup from
Stompsoft (formally Veritas BackupExec), compatable with vista.

Seems like if proper drivers were installed for your device then it would be
recognized as an external storage device and receive a drive letter
automatically when you plugged it in.

go to control panel/administrative tools/computer management/disk tools to
see if the device is listed and you can then assign a letter if it lacks
one.

Look in control panel/device manager is the device listed and not properly
setup? (exclamation point displayed next to it).

Tape drives are sequential data devices and are NOT assigned drive letters.

Random-Read/Random-Write devices are assigned dive letters.
