I have two blunt force fixes to your issue.

Your screenshot to me indicates that one of your sidebar gadgets is either improperly programmed, malfunctioning or a combination of both :$:D.

I know this from personal experience. Having tried to create a side bar application myself and running into a few *ahem* frankenstein creations *ahem*, I had those white boxes too. The brute force approach is if you know what add-on is causing them you can delete them directly from

E:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\GADGETS\
or
E:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Shared Gadgets\

Note: I have a dual boot so Vista for me is installed on E:, XP on C:. You may need to change that E for a C.

Next option, which is a bit less brute force is to edit your settings.ini file in here:

E:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar

Your settings.ini file can be opened and edited with Notepad. It'll say something like this:

[Root]
SettingsVersion=00.00.00.01
SidebarShowState=Imploded
SidebarDockedPartsOrder=0x1,0x2,0x3,
Section0=1
Section1=2
Section2=3
[Section 1]
PrivateSetting_GadgetName=%PROGRAMFILES%\windows sidebar\gadgets\Clock.gadget
PrivateSetting_Enabled=true
[Section 2]
PrivateSetting_GadgetName=%PROGRAMFILES%\windows sidebar\gadgets\SlideShow.Gadget
PrivateSetting_Enabled=true
[Section 3]
PrivateSetting_GadgetName=%PROGRAMFILES%\windows sidebar\gadgets\RSSFeeds.Gadget
PrivateSetting_Enabled=true
loadFirstTime=defaultGadget

If you know what section is broken, you can just delete that 'Section' from your settings.ini or try renaming your settings.ini file to settings.old.ini and windows might default to the clock, notepad, rss feeds or just copy mine for the windows default.

Enjoy!

i don't know whether its that program that is causing all the problems, but

I checked and none of them have a warning symbol next to them. I uninstalled
the program that was having problems as well. I've rebooted my computer and
age of mythology still wont uninstall.

i already tried running it in compatibility mode and that didn't work. I'll
try putting the disk in and see if that helps.

I've tried exiting it all at once from the taskbar and started it again but
it didn't help. I've tried all the default gadgets when you go to add a
gadget and even tried some others but none of them work. I'll try updating my
direct x to the latest version.

System restore may be an option, provided that the restore points go back to
before the problem began. If you can pinpoint the date that the problems
started, choose a restore point from the day before.

Hello.
Are you getting any error messages?
Is It possible that you might have disabled it instead of an error causing
it to go away?
Try starting the side-bar by selecting it from the Start menu

I had this problem happen to me this morning. I went to System restore and
found a restore point from ealier that morning made by a Definition update
for Windows Defender (which had installed without informing me). After
rolling back, the Sidebar returned to normal.

In case anyone is interested, the update was titled "Definition 1.22.3587.0"

Hey you might wanna check out this link..worked out for me. Maybe it's the
same kind of error. Don't panic and go through all the three steps, i got an
error on the second step, yet continued and it's now working great.

Here's the link.
