my laptop shut down? how can I correct this? no other cd, or versions were
installed. I heard other people with hp laps having same diffculties

As far as I am aware, your vista will slowly lose it's features and a image saying "pirate" or something will be irremovable from your background. I suggest calling your local microsoft support and getting it sorted out.

MD. When you do not include the original message in your reply, you leave a lot of us in the dark
as to what you were responding to.
