Hey everyone. How ya been.

Basically here's my problem. I'm trying to open the Nvidia Control Panel, and it crashes and gives me the option to check for solutions online.. and Nothing seems to get the Control Panel to open.

Yes, I've done a Re Install of Drivers, I've updated and tried the 180.43, 44, 48 and then just did the 181.20's. Still doesn't work. I was then told that the 185 extreme G drivers helped someone with same problem. So I just barely installed those, with NO luck. It's still crashing. Basically I just got my new GTX 260 today and I now can run SLI, but I can't get the darn control panel open to enable SLI... I'm going crazy here.

I googled the problem, and someone suggested I delete the nvapps.xml folder in the actual driver file location and then reinstall. I tried that as well.

If ANYONE has any idea's on how to fix this I'm very open to suggestions. I've just installed NV system Tools, but if it's anything like nTune I don't want it near my system. lol.

Please help me out. I wanna see these babies in action.

Thanks!

I already have eVGA Precision.. my problem is I can't get into the Control Panel to Enable SLI..

all other programs like Riva, and precision are for overclocking and monitoring.

I have ran into this problems many a time and getting it to work is a crap shoot game... or so it seems.

Things I have tried to solve my problem... in this order (your miles may very ;))

A.- Go to Nvidia and download latest drivers for my OS (x64 + 181.20) and Nvidia System Tools (6.03 latest version 01-09-2008)

B.- Get yourself a good Registry cleaner (I use CCleaner) or use Nvidia Driver Sweeper (careful, I have never had good outcome with it and I usually end up uninstalling my nForce drivers as well... not funny at all! :sa:)

1.- Go to Safe Mode

2.- Uninstall latest Nvidia Video Drivers... Do not Reboot

3.- Uninstall PhysX drivers... Do not Reboot

4.- Uninstall latest Nvidia System Tools (whatever Nvidia drivers left you have except for Ethernet or nForce chipset drivers, read option "B")... Reboot after this to Normal Windows.

5.- Once at your normal desktop, run CCleaner and clean your registry from any Nvidia remants of those drivers you just uninstalled.

6.- Install latest Nvidia drivers (181.20)... remember to "Run as Administrator"... Reboot

7.- Install latest Nvidia System Tools (6.03)... again, "Run as Admin" and Reboot

8.- Go to Device Manager and make sure your Monitor is there with its name and not just as a Generic P&P monitor or Generic Non-P&P monitor... don't ask me why this holds any water, as stated before, I really don't know what causes this error and this is just a temporary band-aid, at least for me.

Good Luck and please, come back to tell us how it went, it may help others as well (aside from making me feel good that I have helped others and not just leech for help myself! :D)

No I deleted nvidia system tools, I deleted physx. all of it. Now physx comes with the driver..

I'll try the above suggestion, I've already tried that a few times. I'm not on 178.24 and these didn't work either. is there a certain driver where there was the old Control panel, and now a newer one. that will work in SLI.. this is such ****. I'm so angry.. worked on this ALL night.

I'll give the last guys suggestion a go. I have ccleaner, and driver sweeper. I'll run them both..

All else fails. is it possible this is like a registry problem, and reinstalling vista might help?? although I've had no problems for months. Just this.

This is what my monitor info looks like.

tell me this. I had my first GTX 260 with 2 monitors plugged it. I didn't unplug anything. I simply powered down my machine. then unplugged one of my monitors. Sold it.. added my new video card.. plugged my monitor into the Top card. turned on.. and now this is what I'm getting. the CP wasn't working before either. but maybe it's cunfused as last time it was on and what not, there was 2 monitors. I don't know. Should I be on Generic PnP monitor. or on something else. Here's what that option looks like. as I can't get into NV control panel. I do it from Display options in Vista.

That should be the right monitor. With SLI enabled, monitor 3 and 4 won't show as you can't use the 2nd card for an output with SLI.

Have you got your second 260 in at the moment? Not sure it will help, but will Nvidia control panel open with only one 260 in?

Well. This was happening before I put the second card it.. So I didn't think that was the problem. I could try it. But NV Control panel was not working last week either. So I don't know.

I'm soo angry here, I just wanna try my new SLI setup.. ya know.. all that waiting. and I can't use it. It's depressing. and my new T240 will be here today also. lol

I know how you feel.

Went to a friends house yesterday to build his new PC for him, core i7, tri SLI 8800 Ultra and everything, got it built and turned it on and there was no monitor output. Tried a 9600 and still nothing. After trying a load of other things, we're saying the motherboard is a bad one, so he's sending it back. Was the XFX x58i and he's gonna try the ASUS P6T I think. Even though it's not my PC, still a pain to not see it working.

Have you tried nHancer? You can enable SLI and everything in that. I know it won't fix the control panel, but it's a workaround nonetheless.

Again, I am not 100% sure but I was getting the same problem you had and one thing that fixed it was to install x64 drivers for the monitor until the DEvice Manager reads it.

I have an Acer 2216W and the device manager kept showing Generic PnP and Generic Non PnP as my monitor devices. Once I loaded the x64 drivers for it, the device manager now shows Acer 2216w and Generic Non Pnp monitor.

I think is worth a try... don't you?

Does Windows Update not have any drivers available to download for monitor? It always picks drivers up for my Dell monitor. It is worth a try like AstaLaVista said.

I have not tried nHancer. I will give that a try, as thats my main problem.. I still would not be able to fine tune settings, or add Vibrance settings to my monitor.. but it has it's own programs.

I'll try nHancer.. and no there's no windows update drivers for my monitor.. or there is, but I didn't install it? should I try that.

Also I'm about to power on my newly plugged in Samsung T240.. Should I turn it on and see what it does?

Also when NV CP crashes, I get the look online for a solution. and windows comes back with details saying this.

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Users\xx\AppData\Local\Temp\WERE7BF.tmp.version.txt
C:\Users\xx\AppData\Local\Temp\WERFE2D.tmp.appcompat.txt
C:\Users\xx\AppData\Local\Temp\WERFE2E.tmp.mdmp

Thats the local/temp files in my user name. I X'd out the user name.. but would it help to delete everything in the temp file, or no? lol

I'm about to do a windows Backup to like a month ago and loose whatever I've done since. see if that works.

Also if I backup to a month ago like that. do I loose all the saves on my current playing games??? that would suck.

If you are talking about System Restore Back up, I think you would only loose updates and new installations but not data... AFAIR.

Oh and having windows update your monitor can not hurt your situation.

I did a search in the registry for "nvidia" and nothing came up, so I didn't bother mentioning to try search the registry.

But good you got it working :)

No, CCleaner didn't. I even cleaned registry with Ccleaner twice.. lame huh.

Yup. All solid now. First run in Mark06 with a video playing and music in background I still scored over 21k.. so we'll see how it goes later.

So far all is good. :) and the new 24 is sweeeeeet
