OK, so here's the deal. I've recently built this machine with my Q6700, and I'm enjoying it. but at the moment I am going to be building someone another machine, they are going to take my Q6700 for a Good Price ;) so that leaves me open to get a new CPU.

I'm going to get a great deal on the QX6850. or the Q9550

Should I get the QX6850, or should I go with the Newer, 45nm Chip. with a lower 95w (vs QX's 130w)
the Q9550. it's only $329.00 but I have a freind that works for intel and I can get the Q9550 for $250.

So for about the same price I can get the QX6850, older Technology, but Unlocked Multi for my OC'n.
or I can get the newer, smaller, less power consumption Q9550
The Q9 series does have the 12MB cache, thats supposed to be a big part of it being a good CPU. but the Q9 has only a 8.5 Multi and people hit FSB walls and what not.

So I'd love to hear everyone's opinion on this. Also I'll be throwing this onto a eVGA 750i FTW! Mobo.

Thanks

Personally I would get the newer chip with a bigger cache - Have you considered the Q9650 @ 3ghz?..maybe you could get a deal on that one.

What cooler do you use for O/Cing?

id go Q9550 .... the QX range is overrated IMO

& for about the same price you get ...45nm ....12mb cache instead of 8mb

in regard to OCing....i don't think either of these chips will clock very far past stock due to them being 1333mhz stock...
& quads clock less than they're dual core counterparts

lower voltage & lower heat = win.win
:)

The Q9650 looks good if you can get a deal on it.. the Q9550 does great if its the better deal. 12MB over the 8 anyday.

The Q9650 is to much, and I can't get a deal on that one yet.

and I've seen many many people running there Q9550's at speeds of around 3.8 GHz with under 1.4 volts. so I'm thinkin i could reach something like that. Maybe.

I still have not decided yet.

I have my 9450 at 3.4 at stock voltage, haven't seen any need to go faster either. The 9550 should easily do so.

It depends on who this person is?

If the person you're building the machine for is in a position to throw you more business, then I'd forget about my own upgrade (which in this case is really insignificant), and instead try and give your customer the best deal with the best hardware possible. If there's anything better than a guy wanting you to build him 1 machine, it's that same guy wanting you to build him 10. In this case, I'd pass on the 45nm savings to him and worry about my own upgrade when there's really something to upgrade to. At 3.6GHz, you already have more cpu strength than you could possibly need. The only thing you'd be upgrading would be the size of the cache... and that's not really worth a couple hundred dollars... and neither is the ability to go from 3.6GHz to 3.8GHz considering 3.0GHz more than fulfills your most demanding needs... ie, gaming.

If it's a friend of yours, and you're really insistent on the 45, then I'd be up front with him. I'd take the bigger hit myself on the 45 and give him the 65 at a really sweet price... somewhere around the $100.00 to $120.00 range. Since the core has been given more volts than stock, this only seems fair; there are no guarantees as to the lifetime of the chip. Or, again, since it is a friend and you're already cool, I'd just give him the 45 at the good price.
