RWW only works with my machine

I have a very strange thing happening with RWW on a network where I just
successfully installed a godaddy cert.

After installing the cert last night I have been able to RWW into the
network with no issues. Then I receive a phone call from the company saying
that they still cannot access RWW. I tried it again from my network on
different computers and can access it just fine. I thought they were doing
something wrong until I went to another customers and tried it from there
and sure enough no access! Any ideas?

There really is no other information.

Just a 404 error page not displayed is all.

No, that's good info.

That's not a page not displayed - it's page not *found*.

So... can you connect locally (from a workstation)...
http://<servername>/remote
?

Just tried it again and here is what I get...

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems

More information

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

a.. Internet connectivity has been lost.
b.. The website is temporarily unavailable.
c.. The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
d.. The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the
website's domain.
e.. There might be a typing error in the address.
f.. If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click
Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS
protocols are enabled under the security section.

For offline users

You can still view subscribed feeds and some recently viewed webpages.
To view subscribed feeds

1.. Click the Favorites Center button , click Feeds, and then click
the feed you want to view.

To view recently visited webpages (might not work on all pages)

1.. Click Tools , and then click Work Offline.
2.. Click the Favorites Center button , click History, and then
click the page you want to view.

Assuming you are typing in the correct thing.
(Please post what you are typing)

Is Port 80 or 443 redirected to the SBS server?
(or if this is SBS2003 and you have 2 NIC cards are you allowing RWW?)

What ports do you have forwarded to the server?
and please post what URL you are typing internally and externally to get
this message.

Also
What Is issuing your IP's in your Domain?
If it's the Firewall (Disable it)
turn on DHCP on the SBS box and configure IP's

This could also be a Win's DNS issue

Also on wild goose chases remember to go into the dns manager of the
server to confirm that the workstations are correctly listed in dns.
Often there are bad entries in dns so the server tells rww to go look
for ws02 at 192.168.16.45 when it is really hangoing out at
192.168.16.21.

Confused?? Everything is working fine now. When I was testing this from
another location it just so happened that that location lost internet the
day I tried to test it. So the message I was getting was really true I had
no internet but I did not know it at the time.

It's always useful to also browse to another site - google.com or similar to
make sure it isn't your Internet connection :-)
I've seen this so many times with my clients.

Yea and it would be nice if I new that I had to go into User Account
Properties under Users and Groups in the console and Set Computer Network
Access to a local administrator of their computers too. :) That was not
common knowledge to me and no one mentioned it in here. Without doing that
they could not access their computers. Oh they could get into RWW alright
but when they tried to go all the way into their individual PC they would be
denied. Again, I thought this was working until I tried to login as a user
tonight and couldn't get to a computer. The administrator account could but
not a user level account. Once I changed the user to local admin in the
console, tada! Right in. Live and learn. Gotta love this gig!

What really puzzles me is that there is so much emphasis on making sure that
you are the local admin on the pc when you run the "connect" command but
nothing said about local admin in the console of the server.

correctly added to the SBS domain.

My Computer

C

Cliff Galiher - MVP

#20
You've made it work, but that isn't a normal necessary step. See, local
admins are allowed to log into a PC remotely for administrative purposes.

RWW, conversely, isn't for administration, so local admin privs are not
normally required. It works because the security policy is checking to see
if the user has permissions, and as a local admin, they do (for reasons
listed above) but that just means...as SG implied...that the PC was not
joined to the domain properly.

SBS sets certain settings on the object in AD and on the local machine when
it is joined that sets the list of users allowed to join to the machine via
RDP (which includes RWW.) Local admins are always allowed by the local
security policy.

Other users can be added by viewing the computer properties (on the client)
and hitting the "remote" tab. On that remote tab, you'll see a "remote
desktop" section and a "select users" button. Hitting that button will show
non-admin users that also have permissions to join the domain.

You can add a user there so that they don't have to be local admins.

And this isn't an undocumented trick. This is one of those "the wizards do
it for you" things that makes it *so* important to always use the SBS
wizards.

HTH,

-Cliff
