Self Created Storage Folders have Vanished

D

I have been using Windows Live Mail with no problems. I had created several
folders in the Storage Folders section, and was using these to store old
e-mails sorted by subject. I notice this morning that although the Storage
Folders section still there, the folders I have created have disappeared.
Only the Drafts, Sent and Deleted Items sub-folders remain. Is this
something new, and can I get my data back?

Thanks

Debbie

Look for your missing folders/messages within WLMail's Message Store* under the folder called 'Storage Folders'.

*The path to Windows Live Mail's Message Store folder in its default location, involves a hidden folder, so ensure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked under Folder Options in Windows Explorer...

The default location of Windows Live Mail's Message Store folder is:

Vista & 7: %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Users\<User_Name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

XP: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Documents and Settings\<User_Name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

I was able to find the storage folders, however with the latest Live update I am getting live hotmail instead of live mail. This does not make me happy. Is there a way to go back??? Thank you.

Are you the OP?

What Operating System are you using?

What version of WLMail do you have (Help->About Microsoft Windows Live Mail)?

I am not sure what you mean by "I am getting live hotmail instead of live mail"...

Are you talking about the default for e-mail links and such?

To set Windows Live Mail as default:

Ensure Windows Live Mail is set as the default e-mail program in all the relevant places as follows:

Firstly, Microsoft Outlook can silently steal some of the the e-mail defaults when you open it, so if you have Outlook installed, uncheck the option: "Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar" at Tools->Options...->Other [tab] in Outlook. It may also reset itself as the default e-mail handler after an update.

In Vista, apart from making WLMail the default Mail and News handler at WLMail's Tools->options...->General [tab], also set all its defaults through: Start Orb->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab]->Set programs [button]->Set your default programs->Windows Live Mail, and Windows Live Mail (news).

Also, follow that up by going to: Start Orb->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab]->Set programs [button]->Set program access and computer defaults->Custom, and check "Windows Live Mail" under "Choose a default e-mail program :"

In XP, apart from making Windows Live Mail the default Mail handler at WLMail's Tools->options...->General [tab], also ensure it is set as the default E-mail program through: Start->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab].

Then go to: Start->Set Program Access and Defaults->Custom, and check "Windows Live Mail" under "Choose a default e-mail program :"

If these actions fail to reset WLMail to the default e-mail handler, then change the default to some other e-mail program (E.g. Outlook Express/Windows Mail), then go back and change it to WLMail again.

If you hard drive is failing..you should consider backing up the Contacts database for the default account if you are not using a
Live ID.
