Hello,
It is Dell and I have Vista 64 bit on it. It is my home computer and using it since last 4 yrs without any issue. Only operation it does to go to F2 mode only otherwise throws same 'User Name' and 'Password' window.
If it lets you log on, see this tutorial how to change it back to boot into your account:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66966-logon-automatically.html?filter[11]=User%20Accounts

If the machine is 4 years old it's likely it asked you for a user name on the first boot. When it asked you for password if you just hit enter without putting anything it may accept a blank password.

I don't know what default user name is used by Dell but on HP it used to be either Owner or HP_Owner. You might try a Dell online forum.

It's worth a try to put the cursor into the password input line and just hit Enter. See if it accepts NULL password.

A note on the above.

Usually I have found that Dell default for first time user name is name-PC,
keith's-PC, John's-PC etc. << your name-PC >> may work?

If the excellent suggestion posted above does not come to fruition.
It may be worth checking in you manual, but I suspect the F2 Key gets you into the Bios.
Maybe something can be done from there.

Just wondering how and if you got this problem resolved because I am having the same issue, and I was in the middle of turning in homework. Now I'm stuck :(..
