svchosts.exe multiple instances

L
#1
Is it normal to have 12 instances of svchost running.

I have 4 instances of svchost.exe (LocalServiceNetworkRestricted) of which
one has a commit value of 66.5MB of memory.

The rest are as follows (label noted only):
- NetworkService
- LocalService
- DcomLaunch
- imgsrv
- LocalServiceNoNetwork
- netsvcs
- rpcss
- werSvcGroup

Are all these necessary? I ask because when I try to play an AVI file I get
a message that I have low memory even though I am only using 50% of my
available memory and the memory usage of some of these files have the largest
allocation.

I would suspect that the low memory error message is a red herring,
I've never had low memory messages when playing AVIs and my No 2 PC
has a similar spec to yours.

You could always close down the instances and see if it makes any
difference...I suspect that it won't.

FWIW, I have 7 instances running and I have just rebooted.

I notice that you are running a beta OS too!

Vista has had a lot of system services that used to be standalone moved into
SVCHOST processes for performance reasons. So, you are going to have many
more of them than you would in XP for instance. Nothing to worry about.
