Hey guys, my sister is having this exact problem (thank god its not me,
sounds like a pain in the ass). I've told her about the SafeMode/System
Restore option, but there are no profile to restore to. So I don't
really know what else to tell her. I don't really know if a complete
reformat is an option, I don't know how much school work is on the
computer.
Is there anything else to do?

Hi EliteMarine,

You can check in this tutorial to see if one of the other methods will fix the problem for her.

Brink, I followed the link in the above post. I go through step one and on
to option 1 through step 6 B, I never completed step 6 C or any steps beyond
that. Then I had to leave and my husband said I probably needed to start
over so I closed everything and restarted the computer, then amazingly when I
attempted to log in at my administrator account with the same password, it
let me in, looks like I lost my settings but I am in. My query is this,
without having completed the final steps (6C and on) have I screwed up
something else ?? Also I copied the numbers from the jpeg images exactly as
they were shown, was that correct ? Any assistance or passing of knowledge
would be so appreciated. Thanks for your time. D

Hi D,

NO, you didn't mess anything up. You just didn't finish. Your settings will most likely be in the user profile in step 6C with the "bak" at the end of it. You can just go back and double check what you alread have done and then finish up to have it back the way it was. That's all.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi, all I have similar problem.

Though the issue is Admin account works OK just I can't activate Guest
or additional user account and get the same message. I have check
registry and everything appears OK, ie. no .Bak file. Also none of
the guest profile or user profile aside from administrator profile
appears registered?? I'm running a new Toshiba and it has the
fingerprint reader could it be something to do with that? (long
shot..)

any advice appreciated

Hi,

I have gone through probably all of the tutorials on this thread and everytime I encounter the same problem. Most solutions advise booting into safe mode as the administrator, but since I don't have that automatically selected on my computer, I have to turn that feature on. A process I can't complete because only an administrator can do that. Since I am on a guest profile, everytime something needs administrative approval, it won't work. I need help!

Aaron

Plus this problem first occured about a month or two ago so i'm not sure a system restore would go back far enough to fix it??

Hi all,

Just wanted to say THANKS to all of you on this thread. I had the same problem and had no clue how to fix. googled the error msg and found this forum and thread and by reading thru could do the system restore and all is now well. So annoying that these bugs or whatever just show up. Really appreciate it!

Many thanks to olracdesign for getting me out of a $300 Geek Squad fee to fix my problem. I followed the directions he gave to do a "system restore" and my desktop suddenly appeared.

I had the same problem and found a much easier fix. I logged on in safe
mode as describe, then ran a system restore which fixed everything.

I just wanted to thank A.Kirke for the info listed above. When waking
my laptop up from sleep I recieved the message "User profile service,
service failed to Logon". I have been upset for the past several days
w/o being able to retrieve the safe mode manner or access other profiles
and no time to deal with it. I decided to search online (via my
husbands comp) for solutions to my problem thinking I probably had one
of those "no one knows what I'm talking about problems" when I ran
across this thread. I applied every detail listed in the quote above
and what a wonderful feeling it is to have my computer back. Again
Thanks so much!

I just wanted to Thank Mr. JohnBailey. I tried his solution and it worked great. This happened to my wife's account and I was able to regedit her account from my administrator account. The only thing that was lost was the password to her Outlook pop server account.

I was able to boot up in the safe mode. When I went to system restore it
says that I don't have any system restore points. Guess I did not turn
that option on. I removed the password from the administrator log on,
that was the only account I had set up on the laptop which is using
Vista.

Any suggestions? It comes up in the safe mode but I don't have a
restore point to go to.

Thank you.

Hello Sarah,

Cince you did not create a password for the administrator account, you might see if leaving the password field empty and presssing enter will allow you to. If not, then you can use METHOD TWO in the tutorial below to do a System Restore at boot instead.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html

Hope this helps,
Shawn
